O século XVIII viu nascer Jean-Marie Vianney (1786-1859), “o prisioneiro do confessionário”! Educado numa família piedosa e generosa perto de Lyon, mostrou logo sinais comoventes de ardor e caridade. A Revolução Francesa que dilacerou o país e causou uma profunda crise no seio da Igreja, semeando a divisão entre o clero, não o impediu de receber os sacramentos clandestinamente e permanecer fiel ao seu maior desejo: Tornar-se sacerdote. É graças a um pároco da região que o ajudará a realizá-lo. Os cinco Papas precedentes não deixaram de louvar a perseverança e a coragem do humilde e fútil seminarista face às suas grandes dificuldades de aprendizagem. Acaba por ser em Ars, uma aldeia circundante e espiritualmente deserta, que exerceu o seu sacerdócio com grande zelo e caridade especialmente para com os pobres, até morrer de exaustação. Imbuído pelo amor de Deus, é no confessionário que passará a maior parte do seu tempo desde o alvorecer depois de apenas três horas de sono. A sua reputação como confessor incansável, o seu ascetismo e os seus milagres, atraíram muitos pelegrinos que vieram procurar conforto e luz junto dele. Mas também atraíram a inimizade das forças do mal.
The XVIII century saw the birth of Jean- Marie Vianney (1786-1859), “the prisoner of the confessional”! Raised in a pious and generous family near Lyon, he soon showed moving signs of ardor and charity. The French Revolution that torn the country apart and caused a profound crisis within the Church, sowing division among the clergy, did not prevent him from receiving the sacraments clandestinely and remaining faithful to his greatest desire: Become a priest. It is thanks to a parish from the region who will help him to do so. The five previous Popes did not fail to praise the perseverance and courage of the humble and futile seminarian in the face of his great learning difficulties. It turns out to be in Ars, a surrounding and spiritually deserted village, in which he exercised his priesthood whit great zeal and charity especially towards the poor, until he died of exhaustion. Imbued with God’s love, it is in the confessional that he will spend most of his time from dawn after only three hours of sleep. His reputation as a tireless confessor, his asceticism and his miracles attracted many pilgrims who came to seek comfort and light from him. But they also attracted the enmity of the forces of evil.
