A categorização de uma obra é sempre difícil, as fronteiras dos géneros e subgéneros
literários nem sempre estão bem delineadas e a aplicabilidade destes termos não é
consensual. Partindo do argumento de que é possível e necessário estabelecer géneros
literários e que estes se encontram nas características comuns a grupos de textos, o
presente trabalho pretendeu problematizar a relação entre géneros literários e a tradução.
Para avaliar este primeiro argumento, e tendo como objecto de estudo o cozy mystery, sub-
-subgénero do romance policial, apresenta-se uma breve história da evolução das
narrativas policiais que demonstra não só a sua variedade mas também aquilo que têm em
comum e que permite agrupá-las num subgénero literário. Por forma a analisar a influencia
que determinado subgénero pode ter na tradução, apresenta-se uma tradução de inglês para
português da obra literária The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, da autora Lilian Jackson
Braun, e uma reflexão sobre esse trabalho tentando cruzar as características do cozy com os
problemas e desafios lançados à tradutora. Esta tradução serviu também de base a uma
análise das estratégias utilizadas, e em que se pretendeu apurar de que forma a criatividade
e o conhecimento tácito participam no acto tradutório.
The categorization of a literary work is always difficult. The frontiers between genres and subgenres aren't always easy to ascertain and the use of these terms is not consensual. Arguing that it is possible and necessary to establish literary genres and that they can be found in the common characteristics of a group of texts, this work aims to study the connection between literary genres and translation. To validate this first argument, and having the cozy mystery (sub subgenre of the crime and mystery story) as this project's object of study, it presents a short history of the crime and mystery story evolution which not only demonstrates the variety of these texts, but also the things they have in common and that allows us to classify them as a literary subgenre. To analyse the influence that a certain subgenre has in translation, this project includes a translation from English to Portuguese of the literary work "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards" from Lilian Jackson Braun, and a reflection on this translation work, in the attempt to establish connections between the characteristics of the cozy and the translation problems and challenges felt by the translator. This was also the basis to reflect about the translation strategies used and the endeavour to determine in what way creativity and tacit knowledge are involved in the translation act.
