Abstract(s)
O propósito desta tese será o de definir o conceito de Modernidade formulado por Hannah Arendt de modo a agregar uma parte substancial do pensamento desta autora. Efetivamente, a unanimidade que aclamou Hannah Arendt enquanto uma das mais relevantes teóricas políticas do século XX foi, desde sempre, obrigada a conviver com a falta de sistematicidade associada ao seu pensamento. Mais ainda, os mesmos autores que convergiram na importância que atribuíram ao pensamento arendtiano também discordaram, significativamente, na definição daquilo que esse mesmo pensamento possa ser. Procuraremos, por isso, apresentar as razões para a falta de sistematicidade que Hannah Arendt optou por atribuir ao seu pensamento. Seguir-se-á uma breve apresentação das reflexões fundacionais sobre a Modernidade e que servirá de antecâmara a uma exposição do conceito arendtiano de Modernidade. Iremos, igualmente, tomar posição face a algumas das principais contendas doutrinárias que têm ocupado os estudiosos do pensamento de Hannah Arendt, o que nos permitirá apresentar o pensamento desta autora como sendo próximo do conservadorismo, mas sem que exista nos seus postulados uma filiação a posições anti modernistas. Não obstante, continuarão a ser necessários estudos mais desenvolvidos que analisem os seguintes pontos de controvérsia: as características da Modernidade que não são comuns a todas as sociedades enquadradas neste período Histórico; a comparação entre o conceito de Modernidade formulado por Hannah Arendt e os conceitos de Modernidade de outros autores e, por último, a indagação sobre a hipótese de aplicar o pensamento Arendtiano enquanto grelha interpretativa de acontecimentos do nosso tempo Histórico.
The purpose of this thesis will be to define the concept of Modernity put forward by Hannah Arendt in order to bring together a substantial portion of her thought. Indeed, the same unanimity that consecrated Hannah Arendt as one of the most relevant political theorists of the XXth century was always forced to co-exist with the absence of a systematic methodology underlying her work. Moreover, the same scholars that agreed on the importance that they have ascribed to arendtian thought have also disagreed, significantly, on the definition of what this same thought is. Our research will look to convey the motives for why Hannah Arendt opted to associate herself with a type of reasoning that was marked by a lack of a systematicity. After this, we will be presenting a brief overlook regarding the foundational reflections on the concept of Modernity, and which will serve as a preamble towards portraying Hannah Arendt`s own interpretation of this concept. Furthermore, we will also be taking a stance on some of the main doctrinal disagreements that were raised by the scholars of Hannah Arendt`s thought and this in turn will allow us to portray the arendtian remarks as approaching conservatism but without there being an adoption of anti-modernists stances within her postulates. However, even after we present our conclusions there will still need to be further studies that look at the following points of contention: the characteristics of Modernity which are not common to every society included in this same Historical period; the comparison between the concept of Modernity as formulated by Hannah Arendt and the concepts of Modernity of other authors; and lastly a in depth look at the possibility of applying Hannah Arendt`s thought as a way of interpreting events of our own Historical time period.
