O acesso à internet tem-se tornado parte do quotidiano das pessoas, fruto da
evolução global da tecnologia e da sociedade. A população jovem sido alvo particular de
atenção, especialmente pelo seu uso problemático. Atendendo à popularidade da internet,
a atenção aos motivos que levam ao seu uso é um aspeto central para compreender o
fenómeno, particularmente quando este é problemático, sabendo-se ainda pouco sobre a
sua relação com o bem-estar das pessoas que a usam. Considerando a escassez de estudos
sobre estas temáticas, o objetivo deste estudo consiste em explorar a relação entre a
motivação dos jovens adultos para o uso da internet, o seu uso problemático e o bemestar. A amostra deste estudo foi constituída por 320 participantes com idades
compreendidas entre os 18 e os 25 anos. Para este estudo, os instrumentos utilizados
foram o questionário sociodemográfico, a Escala do Uso Problemático Generalizado da
Internet (UPGI), Escala do Bem-Estar Pessoal (EBP), Escala do Bem-Estar Psicológico
(EBEP-42) e o Questionário de Motivos para Uso da Internet (QMUI) como adaptação
do Questionário dos Motivos para o Jogo Online. Os resultados consistiram na existência
de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre o UPGI e os motivos em função do
sexo, com pontuações superiores no sexo masculino. Encontrou-se, também, uma relação
positiva entre os diferentes motivos e o UPGI, assim como uma relação negativa entre o
UPGI, e ainda com os motivos, com os níveis de bem-estar. Os resultados são discutidos
à luz da literatura, esperando ajudar para uma melhor compreensão deste fenómeno.

Internet access has become part of people's daily lives as a result of the global evolution of technology and society. The younger population has been getting particular attention, especially for its problematic use. Given the popularity of the internet, a central aspect to understanding the phenomenon is considering the reasons that lead to its use, particularly when it is problematic, since very little is known about its relationship with the well-being of the people who use it. Considering the scarcity of studies on these subjects, the aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the motivation of young adults to use the Internet, its problematic use and well-being. The sample of this study consisted of 320 participants aged between 18 and 25 years. For this study, the instruments used were the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Scale of Generalized Problematic Use of the Internet (EUPGI), the Personal Well-being Index (PWI), the Psychological Well-Being Scale (EBEP-42) and the adaptation of Online Game Motives Questionnaire into Internet Motives for Use of the Internet Questionnaire (QMUI). The results consisted of statistically significant differences between the UPGI and the genderbased motives, with higher scores in males. A positive relationship was also found between the different motives and the UPGI, as well as a negative relationship between the Problematic Internet Use, as well as with the motives, with the levels of well-being. The results were discussed based on literature and the aim was to contribute help for a better understanding of this phenomenon.
