Romantic relationships play an essential role in personal and social development, particularly during the young adult stage of life. The present dissertation aimed to validate the Portuguese version of the Romantic Competence Scale (RCS) and to analyze the relationships between romantic competence, socioemotional competencies, individual wellbeing, and relationship satisfaction among young adults. It was also proposed to understand the role of relational factors such as security, trust, and fear of rejection in the emotional and affective functioning of this age group. The research was developed through two complementary studies. Study 1 aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Portuguese version of the RCS. Factor analysis confirmed a two-factor structure, composed of the dimensions Relational Intelligence and Emotional and Behavioral Awareness-Regulation, with high internal consistency and reliability indices. These results confirm the adequacy of the scale and its relevance for assessing romantic competence among Portuguese young adults. Study 2 explored the associations between romantic competence, socioemotional competencies, well-being, and relationship satisfaction. Positive correlations were found among these variables, indicating that higher levels of romantic and socioemotional competence are associated with greater individual well-being and relationship satisfaction. Romantic competence showed a significant positive association with relationship satisfaction, suggesting its protective and potentially mediating role in relational adjustment. Security, trust, and fear of rejection were also found to be associated with how young adults experience and manage their relationships. Overall, this work deepens the understanding of romantic dynamics among Portuguese young adults, by validating an innovative instrument and reinforcing the importance of emotional and relational skills in promoting well-being and psychological health. The results also highlight the relevance of interventions focused on developing these competencies, which are essential for building healthy and satisfying affective relationships.
