Abstract(s)
Retention, absenteeism and early school leaving is in today’s world a phenomenon educational and social
of considerable dimensions. In this regard, the National Council of Education, in its final technical report
(2015), maintains that the retention leads to decreased self-esteem, affects the process of socialisation,
contributes to the alienation of the school and increases the likelihood of abandonment. In this horizon,
the tutorials / mentors, as a measure of pedagogical support, is of particular importance, especially in
the Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária (TEIP). The tutorials in the school context arise on
the American continent and dating back to the 1960s of the last century (Baudrit, 2009). In Portugal,
the first references to the mentoring appear after the publication of the decree-law no. 115-A/98, of 4 May, which adopted the scheme of autonomy, administration and management of public institutions of
pre-school education and basic and secondary education. The law emerges from the possibility of the
school “assign teachers tutors, who will follow in a special way, the educational process of a group of
students” and thus, seek the academic success, the reduction of early school leaving and the increment
of a communication aimed at cooperation between the school and the family (Ribeiro et al., 2012). From
the literature reviewed, the studies have shown the benefits of tutorials particularly in subjects who
experience situations and risk environments.
