School is one of the contexts in which children spend most of their time, and it is also a context for nursing interventions, especially for community nursing, based on the technical guidelines of the Directorate General of Health for the National School Health Programme (PNSE) in force in Portugal. In the school context, especially during breaks and/or physical activity, there is naturally a higher risk of accidents, and teachers and non-teachers are the main first responders for children, especially in urgent and emergency situations. According to PNSE (2015), one of the nurse's interventions in the school community is to maintain and/or improve the health of this community, acting at the level of primary prevention and identifying risks to make the school a healthy and safe place, always based on evidence-based knowledge. Starting from this problem, analysed by a team from a Public Health Unit responsible for school health in a specific group of schools in a Grouping of Health Centres in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley sub-region, a project entitled "Promoting good first aid practises in the school environment - a community intervention" was developed. This project was carried out between 4 September and 15 December 2023 as part of the "Final Internship and Final Report" course, with the general objective of contributing to the promotion of safety in first aid in the school environment in a selected school in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The project was based on the methodology of health planning, following all the phases proposed by Imperatori & Geraldes (1982) and embedding the project in the nursing theoretical framework of Nola Pender's health promotion model. The main outcomes of this project were a reduction in the risks identified, the training of non-teaching staff in good practises regarding the physical spaces for care and the first aid bags, thus optimising the use of the first aid manual introduced at USP.
