Abstract(s)
This study explored the relationship between gender stereotypes and women's mental health in the European Union, focusing on quality of life and depressive symptoms. A quantitative, ecological approach was adopted, based on data collected from Eurobarometer 465 (Gender Stereotypes) and additional data provided by Eurostat, using the 27 EU member states as units of analysis. The study examined the associations between indicators of gender stereotypes and several quality-of-life measures, including life satisfaction, social support, self-perceived health status, unmet medical needs, and depressive symptoms. The results suggest that, at the country level, greater acceptance of traditional gender stereotypes was associated with a lower proportion of women reporting depressive symptoms, but also with indicators suggesting a lower overall quality of life. Specifically, negative correlations were found between traditional gender stereotypes and national indicators of life satisfaction, social support, and self-reported (very good) health, among women. These findings highlight the importance of developing policies and programs that promote gender equality—not only as a matter of social justice, but also as a means of protecting mental health and improving women’s quality of life across Europe.
