Abstract(s)
Leadership, a social phenomenon in a broader sense, has been, and continues to be, an area of significant interest for both researchers and academics. The current relevance of the topic for research seems to be quite indisputable, namely if we consider the developments in management, administration and in the field of political exercise, especially in the last decades and when analyzing the several published studies and this specific phenomenon under different perspectives. The main goal of the present study, and despite reviewing, in a general way, the styles of leadership that have been developed from the middle of the XX century, is to understand, more precisely through a review of the existing literature and of empirical investigations, the dominating leadership styles in the Management of Municipal Councils of Portugal, especially from the perspective of the technical collaborators / subordinates, and the probable existence of a relationship between the perceived styles and the motivation of those same collaborators / subordinates. This research was conducted in three Municipal Councils, with technical staff of different dimensions, namely through a quantitative, exploratory and correlational study. We verified that, according to the perception of the 72 technical collaborators/subordinates that were interviewed, there is no dominant leadership style and that the technical collaborators/subordinates are satisfied with the styles of their leaders. However, we emphasize that if the prevalence of motivational factors of the "Success" type among collaborators / subordinates of the Municipalities is notorious, it is not so evident its relationships with the Leadership Style Perception that these collaborators/subordinates have about the top managers. Significant relationships were identified between the following leadership styles and the following motivational factors: “Relationship” Style / “Success” Factor, “Task” Style / “Success” Factor and “Task” Style / “Affiliation" Factor.
