O presente trabalho de investigação debruçou-se sobre os conflitos interpessoais
entre os idosos residentes num lar de apoio à terceira idade, tendo-se guiado pela
seguinte questão de investigação: Será que o contexto institucional é propício ao
desenvolvimento de conflitos entre idosos?
Com ele pretendemos verificar se os idosos apresentam conflitos com todas as
pessoas da instituição, conhecer as razões que levam ao desencadeamento dos conflitos
interpessoais, apreender as maneiras como é alcançada a resolução dos conflitos
interpessoais e analisar a forma como os idosos, em ambiente institucional, lidam com a
pessoa, após um conflito com ela.
Para investigar esta realidade selecionamos uma amostra de 40 idosos residentes
nos lares da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Fafe. Para a seleção da nossa amostra
baseamo-nos nos seguintes critérios: números igual de indivíduos de ambos os sexos e
que não apresentem défices cognitivos. Tendo como base estes critérios, recorremos a
técnica de amostragem não probabilística, na qual usamos o método de amostragem
intencional.
Neste estudo utilizamos técnicas metodológicas de índole quantitativas,
recorrendo ao questionário misto como instrumento de recolha de dados. Para a sua
aplicação utilizamos a técnica de administração indireta.
Com esta nossa investigação concluímos que em contexto institucional os idosos
apresentam conflitos interpessoais sobretudo com os restantes idosos, porém, também,
foram verificadas algumas situações de conflito com os vários funcionários do lar.
Segundo os idosos as diferenças individuais, a incompreensão, a intolerância e a
partilha de espaços e equipamentos comuns as principais causas dos conflitos
existentes. Neste trabalho de investigação constatámos ainda que os idosos em situação de vivência em lares utilizam várias estratégias de resolução de conflitos interpessoais, sendo, no geral, o evitamento a mais utilizada. Todavia, as mulheres recorrem a dominação como estratégia de resolução de conflitos.
The present work of investigation focused on the interpersonal conflicts between the seniors living in a retirement home, conducted by the following investigation question: Is the institutional context propitious for the conflict between the elder? With this work we aim to verify if the elder develop conflict with everyone in the institution, get to know the reasons that lead to unleashing the interpersonal conflicts, apprehend how the resolution of the interpersonal conflicts is attained and analyze the way the senior, in an institutionalized environment, deal with someone after a conflict with said person. To investigate this reality we selected a sample of 40 seniors residing in Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Fafe’s retirement homes. We based the selection of our sample on the following criterion: equal number of individuals of both genders who didn’t present cognitive decline. To select our sample we resorted to the non-probability sampling technique, more specifically to the intentional sampling method. In this study we used methodological techniques of quantitative nature, resorting to mixed questionnaires as data gathering instrument. For their application we used the indirect method. With our investigation we concluded that in an institutional context elders present interpersonal conflicts specially with the other elder, however, some situations of conflict with the retirement home’s employees were also noted. According to the elders the individual differences, the incomprehension, the intolerance and the sharing of spaces and common equipment are the main causes for the existing conflicts. In this investigation work we could also confirm that seniors living in retirement homes use different resolution strategies to solve their interpersonal conflicts, being avoidance the most used strategy. However, women resort to domination as strategy to solve conflicts.
