Abstract(s)
The literature supports the relevance of investigating the constructs of hopes and fears about the future, resilience, parental support and mental health of young adults. The present study aims to analyze the extent to which the hopes and fears of young adults regarding the future are related to the constructs of resilience and parental support, as well as being associated with mental health. The sample was collected using the nonprobabilistic accidental method, snowball sampling. It included a total of 122 individuals, aged between 18 and 29 years old, the majority of whom were female and of Portuguese nationality. Participants responded, in online format, to a sociodemographic questionnaire and to the Portuguese versions of the Hopes and Fears Questionnaire instruments; Resilience Scale; Satisfaction with Social Support Scale; and Positive Mental Health Questionnaire. Statistically significant relationships were found between parental support, mental health, and resilience. Regarding the hopes and fears of young adults regarding the future, statistically significant relationships were also found with parental support, resilience and mental health in categories such as, for example, “Family/marriage”. This study reinforces the need to continue investigating the relationship between these constructs, and it is pertinent to develop longitudinal studies.
