Abstract(s)
Obesity, which is the basis of many chronic diseases, is considered the 21st century epidemic and the second leading cause of death in Portugal. Childhood obesity is a growing concern worldwide and Portugal is in the countries whose prevalence is worrying. The control of the incidence and prevalence of this phenomenon in the children and school population, considered a goal in the scope of the National Health Plan - Revision and extension to 2020, served as a motto for local intervention. The " Alimenta o Trabalho em Rede" Project is part of the "Internship" Curricular Unit, of the Master's Degree in Nursing with a Specialization Area in Community Nursing, developed at Agrupamento de Centros de Saúde (ACES) Almada-Seixal, at Unidade de Cuidados na Comunidade (UCC) of Seixal and the Unidade de Saúde Familiar (USF) Cuidar Saúde (CS). The objective was to contribute to the reduction of the prevalence of overweight (OW) in children in the 2nd year of Basic Education, in a School Grouping in the Municipality of Seixal, using the methodology of Health Planning. The intervention was delineated based on the Health Promotion Model of Nola Pender and in the Model of Intervention in the Prevention of Childhood Obesity. The method of data collection was through data consultation that translated into Body Mass Index (BMI) values of children belonging to the target population. Pre-obesity and childhood obesity were the problems identified with a prevalence of OW found in Schools of 43% and USF CS of 40%. For the intervention, Health Education (HE) sessions were designed directed to children and caregivers and promoted good practices through the elaboration of a Manual of Nursing Registers and a document of referral of the children with OW to the Units of ACES, as reinforcement networking. It was possible to involve 89.5% of the children of the 2nd year in the BMI monitoring, as well as 100% of the 2nd year classes and 82.5% of the teachers in the HE sessions. 100% of the children with OW from the Schools were referred to USF CS. This project has contributed to the promotion of health and to the reinforcement of networking that is proving to be impacting in the prevention of childhood obesity.
