Introduction Post-operative complications are common in oral surgery, and have important effects in the recovery of the patient, as well as an increased morbidity rate. Dry socket, in particular, presents debilitating clinical aspects, like post-operative pain. Since this is a condition with a multifactorial etiology, it is imperative to know which risk factors are more important in its emergence. The importance of the formation and preservation of the alveolar blood clot indicates the involvement of the hemostasis mechanisms in the etiology of this complication. Objectives In the present study, it is intent to find possible correlations between these risk factors and the emergence of this condition, as well as other post-operative complications. Methodology The author filled in a questionnaire on the follow-up visit of the patients who were subject to dental extractions at Clinica Universitária of UCP-CRB. The gathered data was analyzed using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 20, in order to calculate prevalences and correlations. Results The cases of dry socket were exclusive to female patients, with an incidence of 6% (slightly above what was found in the bibliography). There was found a relation between the disregard for post-operative instructions and the development of dry socket (P=0,011).Conclusion Etiologically speaking, dry socket is an enigmatic disease because of its multifactorial origin. However, the disregard for post-operative instructions and the estrogen cycles show a statistical significant relation with the occurrence of this condition.
