Abstract(s)
Hospital Santa Maria Maior, EPE Barcelos.
This descriptive study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep patterns and depressive symptoms in a sample of children with obesity from the Hospital Santa Maria Maior, EPE Barcelos. The sample consisted in fifteen children aged between eight and ten years old. The assessment instruments used were the Portuguese Standard questionnaire on the Sleep-Wake of Children’s (PSCV) and the Children´s Depression Inventory (CDI). The results did not show a prevalence of depressive symptomatology of the total sample, as expected. In the clinical sample, consisting of 15 participants, of which four were male, there was not a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms in males compared to females as expected and were found with the literature review. The severity of depressive symptoms was not greater in children who had sleep problems. We were also unable to determine with regard to obesity, whether children who had worse sleep patterns, also presented a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms.
