Abstract(s)
Background: The birth of a child is an event that causes a series of changes in roles and family dynamics, these changes are not limited to the couple only, but are extended to the whole family. Studying grandparenthood in male is finding grandfather's prominent role in family health. Objectives: To develop a medium-range theory of the process of transition to grandparenthood in the figure of man as a grandfather; describe the process of transition to man's grandparenthood as a grandfather; describe the nature of man's transition to grandparenthood as a grandfather; identify as conditions that facilitating and inhibiting man transition as a grandfather at the personal, community and social levels; identify the response patterns of the transition to grandparenthood in men as a grandfather; and to characterize the performance of the parental role in the figure of man as a grandfather in family health Methodology: Qualitative study, with reference in Grounded Theory according to the methodological guidelines of Strauss and Corbin (2002; 2008), approved by the Comissão de Ética da Unidade de Investigação em Ciências da Saúde: Enfermagem da Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Coimbra. An intentional sample consisted of twentysix grandparents, saving the inclusion and exclusion criteria, after informed consent. Data collection run from october 2016 to may 2018, in which the grandparents reported their experience of grandparenthood. Results: The man as grandfather performs different tasks or functions in the community and family nucleus where he is inserted for family health, this role performance encompasses as functions: family mediator, instrumental support, relational support, financial support, educator, playful, health caregiver and transmitter of traditions, stories and values. Considering the collection and analysis of data emerged the medium-range theory explaining the phenomenon of the transition to grandparenthood in the male that is intended as an instrument for nurses to help men make healthy transitions to grandparenthood. The phenomenon under study is becoming a grandfather: the process of building grand parenthood in the masculine that takes place in the community and family context, where the family health scope is inserted, where the grandfather can assume great importance. The causal condition of the phenomenon is assuming the role of grandfather. The intervening conditions that hinder or facilitate the process of building grand parenting in the male are: feelings that emerge from becoming a grandfather, watching the restructuring of the family concept, restructuring relationships, reliving parenting, assimilating a concept of parenting different and watching transitions in the family. The strategies found through the data analysis were: assuming differences in the roles, having the grandparents' figures as interaction references, assuming the instrumental support to the children in the care of the grandchildren, building a relationship with the grandchildren, providing instrumental - financial help, giving meaning to the tasks that the grandfather performs, assuming the difficulties and valuing the playful activities with the grandchildren. The consequences of the generational leap are described as: feeling an opportunity for personal development, showing selfconfidence in the role play, taking on a new life project, valuing the situation of one's own health and family and expressing feelings of generational continuity. Conclusion: Studying the figure of the grandfather, structure a medium-range theory that explains the phenomenon of the transition to grandparenthood and characterizing the performance of his role, focuses on the grandparent role in family health, giving visibility and sustainability to the grandfather figure in accompanying and caring for grandchildren, thereby helping health professionals to integrate the phenomenon of grandparenthood, and assisting men in this phase of their life as key elements in harmonizing the intergenerational relationship within family and community.
