Abstract(s)
The increasing complexity of healthcare for children and families requires specialized professionals capable of responding to the specific needs of the pediatric population. In this context, specialized training in Child Health and Pediatric Nursing assumes particular relevance for delivering excellent care centered on the child, young person, and family. This report was developed within the scope of the Final Internship and Report curricular unit of the 17th Master's Degree Course in Nursing with specialization in Child Health and Pediatric Nursing, from the School of Nursing - Porto, Catholic University of Portugal. The report aims to present and critically analyze the training pathway undertaken, demonstrating the acquisition and consolidation of competencies in Child Health and Pediatric Nursing through experience in three complementary internship contexts: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Primary Health Care, and Pediatric Emergency Department. The methodology adopted was characterized by a descriptive and critical reflective approach, allowing for the analysis and substantiation, using current scientific evidence, of the activities carried out during the internships. The developed pathway enabled the consolidation of competencies in the four structural domains of Child Health and Pediatric Specialist Nurse (CHPSN) practice: care delivery, education, management, and research. Specific competencies were developed in communication, pain assessment and management, support for parenthood and family transitions, and in providing care in situations of high clinical complexity. Concurrently, transversal competencies were consolidated in peer education, team leadership, resource management, and integration of research results into clinical practice. This report demonstrates the successful transition from generalist practice to specialized performance, evidencing significant growth at both personal and professional levels. The work offers an in-depth analysis of the specialization process, constituting a valuable contribution to understanding the development of advanced competencies in Child Health and Pediatric Nursing
