A expulsão das ordens religiosas, em 1834, provocou o afastamento da Ordem do Carmo da sua presença em Portugal. Foram necessários noventa e seis anos para se iniciar o processo de restauração da presença Carmelita em território Português.
Os motivos que levaram a esta restauração devem-se a inúmeros fatores, mas principalmente à carência sentida pelas Ordens Terceiras, que nunca deixaram esmorecer a vontade de ter os Carmelitas para as orientar espiritualmente, conforme atesta a correspondência estabelecida entre as Ordens Terceiras do Carmo e a Cúria Geral dos Carmelitas.
A presente dissertação procura identificar as motivações, os desafios e os meios que a Ordem dos Carmelitas encontrou para definir um projeto de restauração da Ordem em Portugal. Esse projeto iniciou-se em 1930, contando com a colaboração das Províncias Bética e do Rio de Janeiro e encontrou em Fátima um meio para legitimar e organizar a presença carmelita no país. Com a ereção do Comissariado Geral da Ordem do Carmo, em 1992, constituiu-se este percurso de restauração.
The expulsion of the religious orders, in 1834, led to the removal of the Carmelite Order from its presence in Portugal. It took ninety-six years to begin the process of restoring the Carmelite presence in Portuguese territory. The reasons for this restoration are due to many factors, but mainly due to the lack felt by the Third Orders, which never let the desire of the Carmelites to guide them spiritually, as attested by the correspondence established between the Carmelite Third Orders and the General Curia of the Carmelites. This dissertation seeks to identify the motivations, challenges and means that the Order of Carmelite found to define a project to restore the Order in Portugal. This project began in 1930, with the collaboration of the Bética and Rio de Janeiro Provinces and found in Fatima the way to legitimize and organize the Carmelite presence in the country.
