Abstract(s)
In this study, we reflect on the experiences of democracy, participation and values by the students of the schools of the Madeira Autonomous Region. We carried out an approach to (s) concept (s) of participation and democracy and their practices in school, understood as "place of many worlds" that there live, intersect and face. This framework allows to understand it as subject to various influences and ambiguities. The social and political participation of Portuguese reflected by the passivity and even the non-participation, marks a centralist past, (re) producer of a culture of obedience. The school, democratic space, can and should educate for democracy through education for democratic practices. Participation of the various actors in school is guided by Portuguese schools announced participation, instrumental and meaningless in the education of students. The participation of students, provided for in the regulations, has virtually no form or substance. School practices are limited to the passive transmission of knowledge by teachers, poor education, perpetuating the power of dominant groups and esvaziadora democracy. We live today a crisis of values that only a high-intensity democracy, with broad participation in decision-making, can redeem, so limit it to a discipline of "catechism" citizen can not pass an illusion.
