The aim of endodontic treatment is to disinfect the root canal system in order to be free of microorganisms at the time of filling procedure. The most commonly used filling material is Gutta Percha (GP), which cannot be sterilized by thermal methods due to its physicochemical properties that can be altered. Root canal and the surface of GP cones may contain bacteria that can influence the success of endodontic treatment. Therefore, professionals can resort to Chairside practice to obtain cones without any form of contamination. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possible means of disinfection. The databases used were: Pubmed, Web of Science and Cochrane, in which 38 articles were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A test of the degree’s contamination of GP cones was also conducted at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. 50 GP cones were incubated in Nutrient Broth culture medium. The result highlighted 14 tubes with turbidity, which proved the presence of a contamination. According to the experimental study conducted, it was concluded that Chairside disinfection is a recommended process which can be aid for the professional, being a quick and economical method. The results of the found studies revealed that: an ideal solution does not yet exist, but Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) and Chlorhexidine (CHX) can be sufficiently safe solutions in this practice.
