Quando comparada com qualquer outro idioma, a língua inglesa assume hoje um papel
sem precedentes. A importância e a dispersão geográfica que a acompanha, decorrente
de factores políticos, históricos e económicos, reveste-se de contornos sóciolinguísticos
específicos, que devem ser problematizados e debatidos entre as entidades responsáveis
pelo ensino de inglês como língua estrangeira, em Portugal. Esta dissertação propõe-se
a verificar o papel da norma e das demais variedades da língua nesse contexto,
analisando o programa do 12ºano de inglês e três manuais seleccionados. Sugere ainda
uma unidade didáctica que procura colmatar ausência de variedades, promovendo o
debate acerca das implicações sociais e políticas decorrentes desta problemática.
When compared to any other language, English plays today an unprecedented role. Its importance and geographical dispersal, due to political, historical and economical factors, imply specific sociolinguistic traits, which should be questioned and discussed by the entities responsible for the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Portugal. This dissertation aims to verify the role played by the norm and by the varieties of English within this context, by analyzing the 12th grade official program, as well as three selected syllabi. It also suggests a teaching unit which aims to compensate lacking varieties and to promote the debate of the social and political implications concerning this issue.
