- Employer branding in portuguese companies : communciation strategies and international master students' perceptionsPublication . Cleuvers, Xenia Rebecca; Oliveira, Ana Filipa Santos dePortugal has become an increasingly popular destination for international students, yet the country faces a significant challenge in retaining this talent post-graduation. This study explores how Portuguese companies utilize Employer Branding (EB) strategies to attract and retain international Master’s graduates, with a focus on their migration intentions. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research combines qualitative interviews with EB professionals from large Portuguese companies and a quantitative survey of international students. The findings highlight a disconnect between what companies offer and what international graduates seek, particularly around competitive salaries, career advancement, and work-life balance, leading to low retention rates. Findings indicate that while some companies have advanced EB strategies, others are still in the early stages of formalizing their approach. Additionally, language barriers and structural challenges within organizations further complicate talent attraction and integration. Despite these challenges, the research offers actionable insights for enhancing EB strategies, focusing on adapting Employer Value Proposition (EVP) offerings and addressing internal barriers, to support talent retention and mitigating brain drain in Portugal. Future research is recommended to further investigate the interplay between EB and broader corporate strategies, as well as the long-term impact of these practices on talent migration.
- The impact of organizational injustice events of recovery : the role of meaningfulness as a mediator and the moderating effect of transformational leadership, transactional leadership, psychological safety climate and forgiveness climatePublication . Diehm, Alina; Saldanha, Maria FranciscaStress-inducing conditions have risen significantly in contemporary society. As such, concerns surrounding employee health, and the prevention of work-related illnesses are increasingly prominent. However, the incidence of burnout and other stress-related outcomes continues to escalate. Unfairness and organisational injustice may contribute to stressful conditions in the workplace. This study aims to identify the interplay of leadership styles, organisational climate, and work meaningfulness on employee recovery from organisational injustice events. Transformational and transactional leadership, psychological safety climate, and forgiveness climate are seen as moderators between organisational injustice and work meaningfulness. Meaningfulness of work represents the mediating variable between organisational injustice and recovery. The second part of the study examines the effect of recovery on work-related well-being variables. A two-wave online questionnaire was conducted. Following the elimination of invalid cases, a total of 180 responses were analysed. Participants completed two surveys, one week apart. The data was analysed using a moderated mediation analysis. The results showed no significant mediation nor moderation between the organisational injustice event and the recovery process of the employees. However, the correlation pattern among the study variables suggests that general organisational injustice (i.e., not pertaining to the event but rather to the general feeling employees have about their organisation) could have shown significant results. The influence of recovery on work-related well-being variables was measured by linear regression and showed significant results. Therefore, future researchers should investigate the impact of organisational injustice in general. Another suggestion for future research would be to investigate other moderators and mediators (e.g. resilience or social support) in the relationship between organisational injustice events and recovery.
- The impact of an apology and its sincerity on forgiveness-related coping responses : the moderating role of procedural justice climate and victim powerPublication . Viana, Cláudia Lomba; Saldanha, Maria FranciscaIn response to changing workplace dynamics, there is a growing need for effective conflict resolution in organisational settings. This research addresses the practical challenge of understanding behavioral responses to workplace conflicts, offering insights relevant to improving workplace relationships and promoting organizational harmony. Specifically, this dissertation investigates the influence of apologies and perceived apology sincerity on forgiveness-related coping responses (forgiveness, reconciliation, revenge, and avoidance) following a workplace conflict. Further, it examines the mediating roles of emotional responses (compassion and anger), and the moderating role of procedural justice climate (PJC) and victim power. Study 1, a quantitative experimental design (N = 107), investigated the effects of apology presence or absence in high and low PJC. Findings indicate that apologies are effective in promoting forgiveness, with minimal impact on revenge and avoidance. Compassion and anger played a mediating role on specific forgiveness-related coping responses, whereas PJC did not moderate this relationship. Study 2, a mixed methods study (N = 70), further examined the role of perceived apology sincerity in shaping coping responses, moderated by victim power and PJC. Results showed that compassion mediated the relationship between apology sincerity and both forgiveness and econciliation. In contrast, anger mediated the relationship between apology sincerity and revenge and avoidance. Victim power and PJC were not signfiicant moderators in the direct relationship, however, the mediation of compassion was stronger in low victim power conditions and low to average PJC. Overall, these results indicates that apology sincerity plays a crucial role in promoting forgiveness and reconciliation, with compassion acting as a significant mediator. Practical implications for organisations include a focus on emotional management interventions and addressing the procedural justice climate to foster positive conflict resolutions, further enhancing organisational well-being and productivity. Future research should explore other contextual factors in workplace conflicts that may drive an individuals behavioral response.
- Palliative care for patients with heart failure in critical care: scoping reviewPublication . Pousinho, Fábio; Bacalhau, Lúcia; Pontifice Sousa, PatríciaIntroduction: Heart failure is a chronic condition affecting thousands globally. At some stage of their illness, these individuals require critical care. Palliative care is essential throughout the course of the disease. Objective: To map the evidence on palliative care for people with heart failure in critical care. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Searches were performed in electronic databases: MEDLINE Complete (via EBSCO), CINAHL (via EBSCO), PubMed, Web of Science, and Repositórios Científicos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (RCAAP, via b-on). Results: 10 sources of evidence were included in this review. The results were grouped into 2 categories-palliative care in the emergency department and palliative care in the intensive care unit. Eight subcategories were identified: identification of the need for palliative care; symptom control; communication, decision-making and advance care planning; management of implantable cardiac devices and ventricular assistance; the dying process; culturally sensitive care; definition of prognosis; bioethical principles and informed consent. Conclusion: Critical care settings are the places where people with heart failure turn to for help with their illness. There are specific interventions for each context that can increase people's quality of life.
- Cultural validation of the fear-of-intimacy scale for the portuguese population: exploring its relationship with sociosexual orientationPublication . Leite, Ângela; Azevedo, ÂngelaObjective: This study aims to adapt the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale for the Portuguese population and examine its association with sociosexual orientation, as measured by the Sociosexual Orientation Inventory, highlighting the relevance of this association as a public health issue. Methods: The Fear-of-Intimacy Scale was validated through confirmatory factor analyses. A multigroup analysis, employing confirmatory factor analysis, was conducted to evaluate the consistency of the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale across individuals in and out of romantic relationships. The reliability of the model was assessed using various indicators, including Cronbach’s alpha, McDonald’s omega, composite reliability, the average variance extracted (AVE), and the square root of the AVE. Results: The results indicated robust psychometric properties for the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale, with a well-fitting model identified. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance related to being in a romantic relationship or not were established; however, error variance invariance was not achieved. Although most dimensions of the two instruments displayed positive and significant relationships, the correlation values were generally modest. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of understanding the relationship between fear of intimacy and sociosexual orientation within the Portuguese context as a significant public health issue. Adapting the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale enables culturally sensitive research and supports clinical interventions aimed at improving relational and psychological well-being, thereby addressing broader public health challenges.

- Exploring the effects of sweet potato leaves on skin health - from antimicrobial to immunomodulatorPublication . Machado, Manuela; Silva, Sara; Pintado, Manuela; Costa, Eduardo M.Sweet potato leaves (SPL), an agricultural byproduct, hold significant potential in dermatological applications due to their bioactive compounds. This study evaluates the phenolic profile of SPL extracts and investigates their biological activities relevant to skin health. Extract fingerprinting, through uHPLC-DAD and LC–MS, identified phenolic acids and flavonoids, with cynarin, neochlorogenic acid, and spiraeoside being predominant. The presence of hyperoside was detected. From a biological standpoint, SPL demonstrated notable antimicrobial activity, with MICs ranging from 2.5 to 5 mg/mL against various bacterial strains, such as MRSA and P. aeruginosa, and effective antibiofilm activity, as it reduced biofilm formation by over 80% for most tested strains. When evaluating its effect upon keratinocytes, the cytotoxicity assessment revealed safe usage concentrations at 111 µg/mL and immunomodulatory capacities, as it increased IL-6 production in unchallenged cells but had no synergistic effects under inflammatory stimuli. While preliminary, and with more assays being necessary, these findings highlight SPL’s potential as a natural agent for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory applications in skin-related applications and open a new avenue for a possible added value application of SPL.
- Bioprospecting bioactive peptides in halobatrachus didactylus body mucus: from in silico insights to essential in vitro validationPublication . Cunha, Marta Fernandez; Coscueta, Ezequiel R.; Brassesco, María Emilia; Almada, Frederico; Gonçalves, David; Pintado, Maria ManuelaFish body mucus plays a protective role, especially in Halobatrachus didactylus, which inhabits intertidal zones vulnerable to anthropogenic contaminants. In silico predicted bioactive peptides were identified in its body mucus, namely, EDNSELGQETPTLR (HdKTLR), DPPNPKNL (HdKNL), PAPPPPPP (HdPPP), VYPFPGPLPN (HdVLPN), and PFPGPLPN (HdLPN). These peptides were studied in vitro for bioactivities and aggregation behavior under different ionic strengths and pH values. Size exclusion chromatography revealed significant peptide aggregation at 344 mM and 700 mM ionic strengths at pH 7.0, decreasing at pH 3.0 and pH 5.0. Although none exhibited antimicrobial properties, they inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation. Notably, HdVLPN demonstrated potential antioxidant activity (ORAC: 1.560 μmol TE/μmol of peptide; ABTS: 1.755 μmol TE/μmol of peptide) as well as HdLPN (ORAC: 0.195 μmol TE/μmol of peptide; ABTS: 0.128 μmol TE/μmol of peptide). Antioxidant activity decreased at pH 5.0 and pH 3.0. Interactions between the peptides and mucus synergistically enhanced antioxidant effects. HdVLPN and HdLPN were non-toxic to Caco-2 and HaCaT cells at 100 μg of peptide/mL. HdPPP showed potential antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects, with IC50 values of 557 μg of peptide/mL for ACE inhibition and 1700 μg of peptide/mL for α-glucosidase inhibition. This study highlights the importance of validating peptide bioactivities in vitro, considering their native environment (mucus), and bioprospecting novel bioactive molecules while promoting species conservation.
