- Bioactive potential of chitosan–oleic acid nanoparticles loaded with lemon peel essential oil for topical treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasisPublication . Ibrahim, Faten M.; Shalaby, Eman Samy; Abdelhameed, Mohamed F.; El-Akad, Radwa H.; Ahmed, Kawkab A.; Abdel-Aziz, Mohamed S.; Habbasha, El Sayed El; Rodrigues, Cristina V.; Pintado, ManuelaThe rising incidence of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) has been leading to the development of alternative antifungal therapies. This study aimed to develop a topical chitosan–oleic acid nanoparticle (CH-OA-NP) cream loaded with lemon peel essential oil (LPEO) for VVC treatment. The characterization of the optimal nanoparticle formulation (F4: 10 g/L CH, 2:1 OA/LPEO ratio) showed high encapsulation efficiency, stability, and controlled release. Moreover, it was characterized regarding its particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and chemical/morphological profile. LPEO-related compounds (e.g., eriodictyol) were identified through LC-ESI-QqTOF-HRMS in the cream matrix, suggesting the preservation of LPEO potential bioactivities after formulation. In silico docking of 12 LPEO metabolites revealed that compounds such as citronellic acid exerted inhibitory effects against several inflammation-associated enzymes (e.g., 14-α-Demethylase). In vitro antimicrobial tests demonstrated remarkable activity against Candida albicans, Gram-negative (e.g., Escherichia coli), and Gram-positive (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. In vivo studies in a rat model of VVC revealed significant antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects of the LPEO-CH-OA-NP cream (5% and 10%), leading to reduced MDA, MPO, and IL-1β levels and increased GSH activity. This novel formulation potentially offers a promising alternative therapy for VVC, addressing the current antifungal therapies’ limitations, counteracting drug resistance.

- Exploring the therapeutic potential of avocado oil: insights into obesity metabolism and immune regulation through in vitro modelsPublication . Machado, Manuela; Costa, Eduardo M.; Silva, Sara; Gomes, Ana Maria; Pintado, ManuelaAvocado oil boasts a compelling nutritional profile characterized by a richness of unsaturated fatty acids and key lipophilic compounds. This study aimed to explore the potential of avocado oil in obesity-related metabolic processes and immune responses modulation in in vitro cellular models. Results obtained unveiled avocado oil capacity to effectively regulate triglyceride accumulation in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes, showcasing a remarkable five-fold increase in adipolysis rate at 15 mg/mL, and an increase in glucose uptake in insulin-stimulated cells. Furthermore, avocado oil exhibited significant immunomodulatory effects in IL-1β-stimulated Caco-2 cells, as it reduced IL-6 (by 11%) and IL-8 (by 12%) production at 10 mg/mL, while only a marginal uptick in TNF-α secretion was observed at the same concentration. These findings underscore the potential of avocado oil to be a beneficial component in functional foods and nutraceuticals targeted at obesity management.
- Age diversity and employee benefits : a study on preferences, age-related needs and work attitudesPublication . Oppenheim, Laura; Marques, Tatiana Iolanda PiresAs the global workforce ages, retaining older employees is crucial to a company's success. The current study examines how employee benefits can be used as a strategic tool to retain and satisfy employees of different ages. The current research examines the relationships between employee benefit satisfaction, job satisfaction, and affective commitment, highlighting the role of benefit satisfaction in fostering positive work-related attitudes across different age groups and fulfilling growth and security needs. The study employs a quantitative approach with a sample of N=159 participants and includes two analyses: a moderated mediation analysis and a correlational analysis. The moderated mediation analysis explores how age moderates the relationship between benefit satisfaction and workrelated attitudes, with growth and security need satisfaction serving as mediators. The correlational analysis assesses age-related preferences for specific employee benefits. The results show significant direct relationships between employee benefit satisfaction and affective commitment and job satisfaction. In addition, benefit satisfaction shows a significant relation with the satisfaction of growth and security needs, which in turn mediates their effects on job satisfaction and affective commitment. However, the age variable does not moderate these relationships, which was initially expected. Correlations between age and certain preferences for employee benefits can be found, the correlation coefficient for all significant relations is negative but indicates only small to medium effects. In summary, the present study highlights the strategic importance of benefits satisfaction in influencing workrelated attitudes and the fulfillment of personal needs and provides valuable insights for companies offering certain employee benefits to their employees. Given the limited research available, this study shows the potential for more detailed investigation, particularly with regard to the age factor.
- Exploring the relationships between perceived diversity at work and employees’ organizational citizenship behaviors and counterproductive work behaviors : the role of inclusionPublication . Kirr, Lea Sofia; Marques, Tatiana Iolanda PiresThe current dissertation investigates the relationship between perceived diversity at work and employee behaviors, specifically focusing on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and counterproductive work behavior (CWB), while examining the moderating role of inclusion. Drawing from self-categorization theory, social exchange theory and others as well as a sample of 183 employees from various organizations, the current thesis explores how perceptions of workplace diversity influence both positive and negative work behaviors. Contrary to initial hypotheses, perceived diversity did not directly predict OCB or CWB. Instead, inclusion was found to be a significant predictor of OCB and CWB, so that higher levels of inclusion were associated with increased OCB and reduced CWB. Moreover, the analysis revealed a marginally significant moderating effect between perceived diversity and inclusion on CWB, suggesting that in environments with low inclusion, perceived diversity was positively related to CWB. When inclusion was high, it helped to mitigate the potential negative impact of perceived diversity on CWB. The findings suggest that creating an inclusive workplace is crucial for mitigating potential negative outcomes associated with perceived diversity, particularly in reducing CWB, underscoring the importance of inclusion in diversity management practices. The current thesis contributes to both the academic discourse on diversity and inclusion and offers practical insights for HR professionals seeking to enhance organizational culture.
- The phantom of the VirginPublication . Pereyra Sarmiento, Patricia Susana; Alves, Pedro Miguel BarbosaThe main theme of this report is around the short film "The Phantom of the Virgin" and aims to discover whether an object is still an object even if it has no matter and how the idea of the object is more important than the object itself. In cinema, for example, we can say that an object exists (even if we only see its projection and then it disappears). In several films inspired by the text of A Gentle Creature (1874) or Krotkaya by the well-known writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky we find an object called an icon, but it does not represent in all versions a Byzantine Madonna. The representation of the concept is transformed into a new object each time. In this short film, also inspired by the story, the object is not an icon but a wooden carving of the Virgin of Fatima. We can recognize her because she is an important symbol for the Church. But her body is dismembered: she has no face, no hands, no eyes, and that is why she is in a restoration room. What is the meaning of a fractioned Madonna being an image that supports the Church? Her role as Mother of the faithful is the role followed by all mothers. In Bologna, as in other cities, there are religious centers that were pagan before they were Christian. The history of humanity and its cultural expressions is made up of layers that are superimposed on each other, not only by the transformation of what is read from the same text, but also by what remains of it. The traces of history continue to a-appear, but we do not understand the same thing. Objects make the call, but devices have been modifying the messages and the objects themselves. The new icon is the mobile phone that sends messages. The short film takes place in a scientific room for the restoration of objects and in the city of Bologna, which reminds us of a distant time. There is no connection between the settings (perhaps a sentence from the story about Bologna). The short film is fragmented, the ideas are loose, and the link is best understood by reading Dostoyevsky's story. Our time is fragmented. However, the super 16 format is maintained as a loyalty to the origins of cinema and the vestiges of a 19th century Russian tale.
