- Towards a framework for repairing stakeholder trust in entrepreneurial small businesses in times of macro-level crisesPublication . Psychogios, Alexandros; Szamosi, Leslie T. T.; Prouska, Rea; Gruda, DritjonPurpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how managers in entrepreneurial small businesses (ESBs) deal with exogenous (macro) crises, particularly in relation to the breakdown of intra- and inter-stakeholder trust. Design/methodology/approach: Utilising a qualitative approach, we draw lessons from Greek ESBs greatly affected by the 2008–2019 economic and 2020–2022 health crises. Based on 54 in-depth, longitudinal investigations of four ESBs at three time points, this research offers insights on overcoming organisation-stakeholder trust breakdowns that emerg due to crises. Findings: The findings suggest that macro-level crises undermined the foundations of trust-based relationships, creating a trust gap between organisations and their stakeholders and threatening ESBs’ business practices. Our framework suggests that ESBs repair trust relationships, both intra- and inter-organisational, through sense-making of trust breakdown, implementing trust-repair strategies, and then maintaining trust in those stakeholder relationships through challenging crisis periods. Practical implications: Practitioners can use the suggested framework in relation to overcoming intra- and inter-stakeholder trust breakdowns during macro-level crises. Originality/value: The paper offers a new framework that can aid entrepreneurs and managers in making sense of repairing and maintaining trust in stakeholder relationships during turbulent times.
- Leader-follower dark triad traits congruence and perceived authenticity : a cross-cultural perspectivePublication . Salgado, Ana Isabel dos Santos; Gruda, JonThis research examines the complex dynamics of authentic leadership in relation to Dark Triad traits (DTT) and cultural contexts, specifically focusing on the congruence of these traits between leaders and followers. Authentic leadership, known for promoting genuineness and integrity, is contrasted with the often-manipulative nature of DTT 3 narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Using multi-level regression analysis on data from 4040 participants across 13 countries, the study examines how congruence in these traits affects follower perceptions of leader authenticity and the moderating role of power-distance. The findings confirm that leader-follower congruence in DTT have a positive association with perceptions of leader authenticity. Additionally, it becomes evident that in high power-distance cultures, congruence in narcissistic traits enhances perceived authenticity. Surprisingly, shared high levels of these traits between leaders and follower do not diminish perceptions of authenticity, suggesting a complex dynamic where similarities foster mutual understanding and perceived authentic behaviour. This research contributes to the literature by integrating psychological trait congruence and cultural dimensions into the understanding of authentic leadership. Despite limitations regarding self-reported data and a cross-sectional study approach, this study highlights the significant impact of these factors in shaping perceptions of leadership authenticity, encouraging further scholarly exploration into effective global leadership strategies.
- Solo music performance assessment criteria: a systematic reviewPublication . Moura, Nádia; Dias, Pedro; Veríssimo, Lurdes; Oliveira-Silva, Patrícia; Serra, SofiaAssessment is a crucial aspect of music performance. In pedagogical contexts, an effective assessment process can measure student achievement and inform instructional decisions that contribute to improving teaching and learning. However, music performance assessment is particularly challenging due to its inherent subjectivity, involving personal expression and interpretation, which can lead to divergent opinions. In this PRISMA systematic review (registration DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/CSM8Q), we aimed to delimit and analyze solo music performance assessment systems found in the literature to date, including their corresponding evaluation categories and descriptive criteria, rating methodology, and target audience. A search in three main scientific databases (Web of Science, Scopus, ERIC) was conducted using keywords associated with the topic of assessment in the field of solo music performance. Ultimately, 20 papers were selected and examined, resulting in 26 original assessment systems for analysis. Regarding sample characteristics, we found that studies mainly focused on evaluating high school and university students, with music teachers and faculty members serving as primary evaluators. Many assessment systems were designed to be applicable across various instruments, although some were tailored to specific instruments (e.g., piano, voice) and families (e.g., brass, woodwind). Systems typically structured evaluation around technical, interpretative/expressive, and various musical feature categories (e.g., pitch, rhythm, intonation), further elaborated with descriptive items. While five-point Likert scales were commonly used, recent studies indicated a shift towards rubrics for detailed feedback, which aids examiners’ understanding and supports student progress. No differentiation was found in assessment criteria based on students’ learning stages, suggesting an area for improvement in refining these assessment methods. This study identifies gaps and proposes improvements in existing assessment systems, providing a foundation for educators and policymakers to enhance curriculum design and instructional practices in music education.
- The effect of national culture on workplace harassmentPublication . Jouannard, Anaëlle Elisa; Gruda, JonThis study investigates the impact of national culture on workplace harassment, focusing on three specific forms of harassment: psychological violence, physical violence, and sexual harassment. Using Hofstede's cultural dimensions as a framework, the research examines the relationships between individualism vs. collectivism, indulgence vs. restraint, and masculinity vs. femininity and their influence on workplace harassment across different cultural contexts. Data from the Lloyd's Register Foundation World Risk Poll was analyzed using multilevel logistic regression models. The findings reveal that individualism is positively associated with higher levels of all three types of harassment, as well as indulgence, while other indicators turn out to have no significance. Some cultural indicators show even higher effect on workplace harassment when analyzed through gender differences. These results underscore the importance of cultural context in shaping workplace behavior and highlight the need for culturally informed strategies to prevent harassment. The study concludes with recommendations for organizational management and HR practices to create safer and more inclusive work environments.
- The role of socio-emotional security on school engagement and academic achievement: systematic literature reviewPublication . Dias, Pedro; Veríssimo, Lurdes; Carneiro, Alexandra; Duarte, RaquelIntroduction: Socio-emotional security and particularly secure attachment relationships with parents and peers have been associated with positive developmental outcomes, including school-related variables. This systematic literature review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the literature, exploring the relationship between socio-emotional security (attachment, support, and secure relations with parents and peers) and academic achievement, school engagement, and early school dropout. Methods: The inclusion criteria were studies with socio-emotional security as the independent variable and academic achievement and/or school engagement as the dependent variable, using a quantitative methodology, written in English. The exclusion criteria were articles presenting literature review or meta-analysis, interventions or instrument validation studies, studies with a qualitative approach, studies developed in an e-learning context, studies with university students, and/or focused on schooling in extreme conditions (e.g., COVID-19). PRISMA guidelines were followed, through a search that resulted in the identification of 38 empirical quantitative studies, published between 2018 and 2022, in English. Results and discussion: The results revealed that parent and peer relationships impact students’ academic achievement and school engagement, as expected, and highlighted the relevance of parental and peer relationships for school-related outcomes. Future research should consider the role of potential mediators and moderators in the relationship between socio-emotional security and school outcomes.
