- The impact of entrepreneurship education on aspiring founders : challenging the status quoPublication . Schmidtsdorf, Marie; Salvado, João CotterEntrepreneurship is a crucial driver of economic development and growth, digital innovation, and new opportunities worldwide. The founders of tomorrow are more global, more connected, and more digital than ever before. With this rise of a new generation, traditional approaches in the higher education sector need to be adapted. The transition to an entrepreneurial future requires academic institutions to play their full role in creating and developing entrepreneurial intentions and give the student access to support on their challenging journey to an own business. This paper supports a better understanding of the effect of entrepreneurship education and the needs of student founders along their entrepreneurial journey, informing the proactive development of more personalized, impactful, and digital solutions in the future. First, a benchmarking analysis of public and private German universities supports understanding the entrepreneurship education landscape at academic institutions. Furthermore, this research collected valuable insights about the effect of entrepreneurship education through qualitative interviews with student founders and educational institutions. This paper aims to bridge a lack of empirical inquiry into student founders' intentions, challenges, and solutions and more strategic integration of entrepreneurship education at academic institutions. The insights that emerge present to inform the development of more personalized and digital solutions enable student founders to turn entrepreneurial intention into actions.
- Mentora Health : a study on the value proposition, customer segments, and revenue model of a new business opportunity in the oncological fieldPublication . Schnepper, Luisa; Salvado, João CotterCancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide. On a global scale, one in six deaths was caused by cancer in 2018 [86]. Even though research suggests that a variety of complementary treatments may substantially increase cancer patients’ quality of life as well as recovery and even decrease mortality, cancer care is commonly focused on clinical treatment solely. Therefore, the startup Mentora Health made it their mission to approach cancer care more holistically and identified a new business opportunity: an online B2C marketplace that connects cancer patients with professionals specialized in complementary cancer care. This paper aims to explore the market environment as well as define how the company can create, deliver, and capture value with such a platform. Secondary data was hence used to estimate the market size, identify competitors, and conduct an industry analysis. In-depth customer interviews with complementary cancer care professionals as supply-side and cancer patients as demand-side of the marketplace were conducted to explore both customer segments regarding their jobs-to-be-done, pains, and gains to subsequently derive a value proposition for both sides of the marketplace. Moreover, the interviews were used to reveal their willingness to pay. Finally, benchmarking and insights from the customer interviews helped obtain a new value curve for the marketplaces and identify a commission-based model as a potential revenue model with a supply-side commission rate between 11% and 20,5%.
- Development of a market study for the Portuguese swimwear brand GuadalupissimaPublication . Oliveira, Vasco Neffe da Costa; Salvado, João CotterGuadalupissima is a Portuguese swimwear brand in its second year of operations. This paper aimed to provide three main insights for Guadalupissima: a better view of the Portuguese swimwear market and its consumers; insights into how Guadalupissima should invest its resources in social media marketing; and to discover what Guadalupissima’s potential customers are looking for in their swimwear. A survey was conducted to achieve these insights. The survey received 90 responses and through the use of descriptive statistics and hypotheses testing, significant conclusions were made based on the sample used. The study found that: consumer gender does not significantly affect yearly spending on swimwear; time spent on social media does not significantly affect how often consumers purchase through integrated social media marketplaces; and respondents preferred to see swimwear products displayed under a more professional lens. In-depth research into the Portuguese swimwear market was undertaken in order to provide a useful competitor analysis for Guadalupissima to consult as well as an evaluation of Guadalupissima’s accessible market in its next year of operations. Final recommendations were made for Guadalupissima to consider when formulating its business and marketing strategy within the context of the literature presented at the start of the paper.
- Educação e cidadania, uma nova prática na pluralidade social: a especificidade da pedagogia cristãPublication . Partindo do pressuposto que a educação é uma atividade intencional, evidenciamo-la como uma condição para a ação do cidadão no contexto da polis, bem como para o desenvolvimento sustentável dos povos. O discurso da educação também propõe que o bem-estar humano possa consolidar as ações individuais com a capacidade de percepção da realidade de cada um, para melhor interação com o meio social e cultural em que vivemos. Neste sentido, a pluralidade social permitirá que o desempenho individual se estabeleça com dignidade para a construção da cidadania, uma vez que, é fundamental o pensamento coletivo no que diz respeito ao desenvolvimento e o progresso da nação. Urge refletir sobre os seus pressupostos teóricos e firmar um pacto cultural cuja atividade criadora do indivíduo se materialize na construção de ideias inovadoras que valorizem o processo de construção da cidadania. Este ensaio pretende: mostrar que a essência da educação está presente, desde a primeira hora, na literatura cristã; demostrar que a pedagogia cristã prolonga, aprofunda e aprimora este aperfeiçoamento intencional do ser humano.
- Improving order-picking operations with precedence constraints through efficient storage location assignment: evidence from a retail companyPublication . Trindade, Maria A. M.; Sousa, Paulo S. A.; Moreira, Maria R. A.This paper is inspired by a manual picking retail company where shape and weight constraints affect the order-picking process. We proposed an alternative clustering similarity index that considers the similarity, the weight and the shape of products. This similarity index was further incorporated in a storage allocation heuristic procedure to set the location of the products. We test the procedure in a retail company that supplies over 191 stores, in Northern Portugal. When comparing the strategy currently used in the company with this procedure, we found out that our approach enabled a reduction of up to 40% on the picking distance; a percentage of improvement that is 32% higher than the one achieved by applying the Jaccard index, a similarity index commonly used in the literature. This allows warehouses to save time and work faster.

Especificamente, no âmbito da PES, trabalhámos, de forma analítica e crítica, a unidade letiva 3 – A Liberdade – referente ao 8º ano do terceiro ciclo do Ensino Básico e Secundário, com intenção de, por um lado, sustentar para este público-alvo, sedento de ferramentas de ajuda à compreensão da realidade, a importância da reflexão sobre o conceito universal de liberdade, que está no núcleo originário da dignidade humana, por outro lado, sustentar a identidade da disciplina e a distinção clara, embora complementar, que deve existir entre ela e a Catequese, nem sempre salvaguardada pelo Programa de EMRC, pela abordagem dos livros adotados e pela ação imparcial do professor.

Nowadays consumers are looking for attractive new innovative products to buy, there is a worldwide trend towards healthier food and more “artisan or specialty” and with this research we aim to analyze the opportunity in the Portuguese market for the introduction of a Bolivian food product, the product in question is a typical snack from Bolivia named “cuñape abizcochado”. In order to assess the market a research in the form of tastings and surveys was done to determine market potential for the product. The main findings from the research suggests that there is potential in the Portuguese market for the introduction of this particular Bolivian snack into the Portuguese market.

- From business plan to value creation : a strategic B2B marketing plan for a start-up in the digital health care marketPublication . Burgmayr, Alexander; Salvado, João CotterThe digital health market is becoming increasingly important and is driven by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the increasing importance of the market, the existing literature does not sufficiently cover direct marketing applications. The dissertation therefore directly addresses this research gap and is intended to demonstrate how concrete B2B marketing strategies can be designed for the digital health market. To illustrate this kind of marketing plan, the Portuguese start-up Mentora Health served as an example. Based on a comprehensive situation analysis, a positioning strategy was derived and captured in a B2B marketing mix. By adopting a mixed research approach, empirical qualitative and quantitative results could be combined with existing findings from corresponding literature. Thus, results from various expert interviews and a survey were formulated into specific marketing strategies. The dissertation illustrates the entire journey of a startup from business plan towards value creation and provides deep insights into the Portuguese hospital market.
