- Exploring market designs for local energy markets : core functionalities and value proposition in the context of blockchain, IoT and prosumersPublication . Tavares, Guilherme Fael de Oliveira; Bohnsack, RenéThis dissertation aimed to assess the impact of innovative smart market solutions and Blockchain technology on achieving efficient localized energy markets. Trends suggest the future of renewable energy generation will involve a move away from centralized power plants, and towards a large number of smaller generation units, such as PV cells. There are clear synergies between the market dynamics of photovoltaic systems and Blockchain-enabled smart markets, which can be harnessed towards integrating new consumption patterns and energy sources, as well as connecting consumers. Successful business strategy to integrate these technologies can lead to market leadership in this new industry. Captivating consumers is a key determinant of success, and offering lower electricity prices a necessary condition. For such offering to be feasible, markets need to be more efficient, as smart microgrids are proving to be. Consequently, there came the interest to see how new local electricity markets could be set up, while taking advantage of decentralization. A peer-to-peer, auction-based, local energy market was idealized and various simulations of were ran with differing levels of participants and structure, to understand the impact on the price of electricity achieved by the market. Market size and structure were both shown to affect price at different magnitudes, suggesting an ideal setup of 25-40 participants with generation capabilities over 60% of demand. Further analysis was undertaken to understand the impact of smart meters and Blockchain integration in such a market. Afterwards, conclusions were compiled and recommendations provided for how to approach new practical implementations.
- SAPANA : creating a marketing tool for social enterprisesPublication . Gomes, Jéssica Daniela Santos; Versari, PietroThis thesis presents the issue of self-sustainability of social enterprises through the example of Sapana. This organization aims at developing a marketing tool for other social enterprises use, so they can simultaneously work effectively and reach their social mission. Starting by questioning ―How can social enterprises develop marketing tools to help social and economic value co-creation?‖ my research intends to identify the company‘s critical practices and methodology that were adopted, enabling the creation of both social and economic value by constantly involving critical stakeholders. With my analysis I propose essential components that should be present in the marketing tool. Social enterprises can adapt them to their business strategy, in order to effectively engage in the value co-creation process. This study can function as a guideline to social enterprises by offering them simple rules to succeed with their projects. They can find advice to shape their primary features in order to reach self-sustainability in the long-term.
- Digital transformation patterns for business model innovationPublication . Braun, Felix Sebastian; Bohnsack, RenéNowadays, organizations are increasingly affected by a phenomenon called digital transformation. Digital technologies, such as the internet or mobile technologies, lead to a shift in the value creation, value delivery and value capture processes of firms. This change can be either incremental or radical, however, there is a consensus among academics that business models are reshaped. One promising heuristic tool to systematically support business model innovation are patterns, which can be described proven solutions to reoccurring problems in a business model context. Although there are various consolidations of existing business model patterns, a structured overview of digital transformation patterns is missing. To create a digital transformation pattern taxonomy for business model innovation, this dissertation applies the modified-Delphi card sorting methodology by Paul (2008) which connects a Delphi approach with card sorting methodologies. In an iterative way, a total of 9 experts in the field of digital transformation were asked to classify 48 digital transformation into meaningful groups. The final taxonomy not only supports practitioners’ creativity and collaboration in the business model innovation process but also can enhance the understanding of digital transformation. In addition, the pattern taxonomy could facilitate further analysis of business model patterns as well as well as scientific discussions in this area.
