- Designing evaluation plans for mHealth interventions : a case study on The Weal Life appPublication . Amaro, Patrícia Isabel Neves; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesAs an applied research project, the purpose of this dissertation is to develop a suitable framework for health-tech companies to evaluate and monitor their mobile-based health technologies’ efficacy and usability, whilst defining features and maximizing performance. Indeed, since no officially recognized standards exist for mobile health (mHealth) apps evaluation, despite the fact they can produce health or behavioral benefits, this crucial assessment is often overlooked by companies and poorly integrated into planning. This research illustrates four mHealth evaluation frameworks and describes the assessment plan that has been developed for The Weal Life app, a socially connected app targeted to caregivers and circle of support. Ultimately, and this is our main finding, we identified two necessary conditions for health-tech companies to maximize their mHealth apps evaluation and performance. The first is to embrace a strategic approach that aligns both the mobile health intervention and app development goals, and the second is to assess the impact of these technologies. Indeed, we show that impact measurement process plays the role of “information systems” allowing companies not only to quantify the impact of their products, but also to monitor and improve their performance constantly. The detail of The Weal Life assessment plan will ensure the findings add to evidence and have broad relevance to healthcare professionals and researchers in general.
- African entrepreneur collective : a business model for supporting local and refugee entrepreneurs in RwandaPublication . Oliveira, Mafalda Pestana Paiva Quaresma de; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesThe present dissertation invites the reader to think about social entrepreneurship and its role in the promotion of entrepreneurship as a tool for job creation, poverty reduction and population empowerment in developing countries in general and in Rwanda in particular. The analysis focuses on the business model of African Entrepreneur Collective, a social organization that has successfully helped local entrepreneurs in Rwanda to sustainably expand their businesses by employing local people and resources since 2012. The Case Study illustrates the scope and action of the organization and clarifies the engagement in a new project to help refugee entrepreneurs. The Literature Review provides the theoretical context for its analysis, which explored in the Teaching Note. We suggest approaching the Case Study by analysing the organization’s current business model resourcing to Social Business Model Canvas, highlighting the impact and value created and the important role of stakeholders. Furthermore, we propose the consideration of the strategic challenges and opportunities to clarify how the new project with refugee entrepreneurs changes the business model.

- How can SpeleoHealth : a medical tour operator : launch speleothearpy services provided in the Republic of Belarus in services in Belarusian SpeleoTherapy Center in Soligorsk for international market?Publication . Lakishyk, Siarhei; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesBeing an applied-research project, the purpose of this dissertation is to enable patients with respiratory diseases in non-Russian speaking countries to get an access to a drug-free way of asthma and allergy treatment – speleotherapy, provided by SpeleoHealth. SpeleoHealth is a tour operator in medical tourism registered in Lithuania which offers speleotherapy services in Belarusian Speleotherapy Center. Another purpose of this dissertation is to research potential market for the company – SpeleoHealth – in order to understand how speleotherapy as a service can be better presented for the clients with respiratory diseases. Ultimately, and this is our main finding, two conditions were identified to get the market for SpeleoHealth. The first is to raise potential clients’ awareness in speleotherapy which is now not regarded as a sufficient therapy to treat asthma and other respiratory diseases. Second, it will be shown that SpeleoHealth offers the services in the business area which may be characterized as an area of high business risks. An existence of such risks may negatively influence on the sustainability of the project in a long-term perspective without risks minimization. Finally, we present a strategy plan of SpeleoHealth Company which aims at expanding speleotherapy services information among potential clients, attracting new patients for trial therapy stay in the Center and risk minimization strategy in order to be sustainable.
