- Associação Salvador : social impact bond feasibility studyPublication . Akim, Yernar; Santos, Filipe Manuel Simões dosCerca de 75% das pessoas com deficiência estão desempregadas em Portugal. - Chapter 11 vs. chapter 7 : the portuguese casePublication . Gomes, Diogo Arcanjo de Meneses; Reis, Ricardo César Ribeiro Ventura FerreiraThe number of bankruptcy cases has been rising in the past decade, thus becoming more relevant to understand the effects of these cases. Bankruptcy costs can vary widely according to the main statistic used (mean or median), being sensitive to the use of pre or post-bankruptcy assets as denominator. One should also take into account that the percentage of bankruptcy costs may change according to the economic environment in which a firm is inserted. Following the existing academic literature, we aim at exploring a comprehensive sample of corporate bankruptcy cases from 2012 to 2015 in Portugal. We distinguish between reorganization and liquidation cases, in order to compare the costs for a firm between filing for either one of the procedures. The results show that filing for the reorganization of the company seems to be a better alternative when compared to the liquidation of the firm – it takes less time to resolve, it is also better in retaining assets after the bankruptcy and presents less direct costs for the company.
- Making the case for innovation to support informal caregivers : an exploratory study on the most relevant characteristics of a mobile technology solution from the particular case of The Weal LifePublication . Radoslav, Athina; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesThe goal of this dissertation is to investigate how a mobile technology solution can support the needs of informal caregivers. The objective of this research was dual: first to understand how a mobile technology solution can be used to answer the major issues of informal caregiving related to modern living and second to determine the features of a caregiver mobile solution that can support the informal caregiver with their care responsibilities. With these objectives in mind, a case study was explored, on the San Francisco based start-up The Weal Life. The Weal Life is a pioneer mobile technology solution in the informal caregiving industry which aligns its mission with the objectives of this dissertation. The Literature Review explored the main challenges of the caregiving industry, alongside informal caregivers’ concerns and needs. Through the case analysis on The Weal Life and the examination of two “holistic” cases, critical mobile features were presented in order to advance better technology solutions for informal caregivers.
- Digitalization of business models : impacts and opportunities for the healthcare industry : a multiple case study approachPublication . Wagner, Felix Dominik; Pinheiro, Susana FrazãoThe purpose of this applied-research project is to understand how digitalized business models can be assessed and analyzed with regard to their success in the broad field of healthcare. Digitalization holds enormous opportunities, but also requires a particular degree of tact and sensitivity concerning business model design. In order to propose specific guidelines for business model design this paper highlights the major dynamics of the digital business ecosystem, like turbulence, disruptiveness and blurred industry boundaries, and describes Omar El Sawy’s VISOR model, with its components Value Proposition, Interface, Service Platform, Organizing Model and Revenue Model. Following this, the main part consists of two case studies, Nike+ and Kinematix, and narrates the stories of one major, incumbent player and of one new entrant, with the purpose to achieve extensive insights on different perspectives of digital business models. Both companies operate in the field of E-health, more specifically running wearables, Nike with a more generic, Kinematix a more sophisticated approach. The main implications drawn from the case studies cover inter-industry partnership choices, the potential of motivational force based on Social Media, the transformation of the patient-caregiver relationship, the barriers to overcome originating from primary healthcare players, as well as specific dynamic and adaptive capabilities. The paper concludes with suggestions to stimulate future research to find solutions and ways to transform healthcare in a more advanced, forward-looking sector.
- Multisensory self-referential stimulation : a contribution for the core-selfPublication . Vieira, Ana Isabel Correia de Matos de Ferreira; Caldas, Alexandre Castro; Nunes, Maria VâniaWhenever there is a decrease of the sensory function, whether due to a disease, trauma or to the normal aging process, a change occurs at the same time in the motor control, in body and emotions perception, in cognitive processing, in the functional activities and in the interpersonal relationships. The feeling that is generated is of loss of identity, of threat, and Self disintegration. This phenomenon of consciousness and identity is called the Self. There are many concepts of the Self but some more recent theories claim that there is only one Self. The human being is a whole and the greater this perception of the personal unit the greater physical, cognitive and emotional functionality can be reached. The Self may change when exposed to various health conditions but also due to sensory and relational experiences or due to the lack of stimulation. The stimulation we get through all sensory modalities helps build the representation we make of ourselves. However unisensory stimulation does not seem to be sufficient to promote perception of the Self as a whole. Multisensory stimulation, that it comprises meaningful and Self-referential stimuli, seems to trigger a more global consciousness of the Self. Self-referential stimuli are stimuli that are experienced as strongly related to one’s own person. The physiotherapist is a professional who distinguishes himself by the use of sensorial stimulation strategies, considered Self-referential stimulation, i.e., auditory-verbal stimulation liked to body parts and direct and prolonged manual contact with the patient´s body. But these approaches are rarely used in neurological Physiotherapy, for sensory and perceptual competences improvement and they are never used simultaneously. In reference to touch there is no concern to assess the perception that clients have about touch. Different meanings can be attributed to physical contact during therapeutic and social interactions and they may generate bonding or avoidant behaviours. If the loss of sensory function, namely the tactile sense, may lead to the disintegration of the Self, the study of this problem becomes more relevant in the elderly because it is proven that in this stage of life there is an important tactile sensory loss with implications in the motor function, in the activities of daily living and in interpersonal relationships. In this sense this thesis has as general objectives (1) to increase scientific evidence about the clinical practice of Physiotherapy; (2) to contribute to a reflection of clinical practice in Physiotherapy as it regards to the importance of sensory stimulation for the construction of the Self; (3) to allow for further understanding of the healthy aging process related to the functional and interpersonal relationships implications of tactile sensory decrease; (4) to make recommendations for enhancing the quality of provision of Physiotherapy services, specifically with regard to sensory assessment and sensory stimulation strategies. To achieve these objectives three studies were developed: (1) “Multisensory Self-referential stimulation of the lower limb – an fMRI study on healthy subjects”; (2) “Tactile Discrimination, Social Touch and Frailty criteria in elderly people”; (3) “Reliability and Validity of the European Portuguese version of the Social Touch Questionnaire”. The results and conclusions of the studies are: (1) unisensorial auditory-verbal and tactile-manual Self-referential stimulation and multisensory Self-referential stimulation elicits bilateral activations of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), of the primary motor cortex (M1)-BA4 and of the premotor cortex (BA6). These sensorimotor areas were located in the lower-limb sensorimotor representation; Self-referential multisensory stimulation related to the body, more than unisensory one, produce a brain activation map in regions that are responsible for multisensory Self-processing. This process may represent the Core-Self. This brain map is composed of cortical and subcortical midline structures - BA7 (precuneus), left BA9 (medial prefrontal cortex), left BA30 (posterior cingulated), left thalamus, bilateral superior colliculum and left posterior cerebellum) and posterior lateral cortex (such as bilateral TPJ, bilateral posterior BA13 (insula), left BA19 and left BA37). Regarding all these structures, bilateral TPJ is the one that showed the biggest activation volume; (2) the decline of sensorial tactile discrimination of the hand is related to increasing age, to the decrease in grip strength and to higher avoidance behaviours and attitudes towards social touch. Sensorial tactile discrimination of the hand also explains frailty levels in the sample evaluated in the current study, i.e. frail elders have greater loss of sensorial discrimination then pre-frail elders. According to these results hand tactile discrimination should be used in assessment and intervention protocols in pre-frail and frail elders; (3) we produced an European Portuguese version of the Social Touch Questionnaire and is a reliable, valid and comprehensive measurement tool. It is an instrument that evaluates a range of behaviours and attitudes towards the touch and can be used by different health professionals, in clinical practice and for research purposes. Regarding the general conclusions of the studies supported by scientific evidence collected, such as: (1) brain areas activated by the multisensory stimulation performed in this study (auditory-verbal + tactile-manual) are those related to the Self processing; (2) decreased tactile sensitivity of the hand in the elderly has implications in the hand strength and in behaviour and attitudes towards social touch and can lead to difficulties in functional activities, decrease in interpersonal relations and the disorganization of the Self; (3) in case of elderly people, despite the deterioration of the sensory systems there is evidence of stabilization or increase of the multisensory integration processing; we recommend to contemplate multisensory Self-referential stimulation composed of unisensory auditory-verbal stimulus requesting to feel specific body parts and unisensory tactile-manual stimulation of the same body parts, when planning intervention strategies for healthy aging with the aim of maintaining the integrity of the elderly Self. According to the conclusions obtained in the developed studies some recommendations are presented for a more appropriate and comprehensive clinical reasoning that can lead to a more effective clinical practice in Physiotherapy.
- How to become a B Corporation : the case of ManipediPublication . Silva, Sara Leão Gomes Lopes da; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesThe idea of what a company’s goals should be has had a massive shift, from only focusing on profits, to also taking into consideration society’s needs and how to engage with it. In fact, the importance of business in addressing social needs is undoubtable, since they are the most efficient way of determining these needs and their solution. Bearing this in mind, it was created a movement of companies committed to use their activity in a way that improving social and environmental issues is at their core mission, the B Corps. In this context, this dissertation focuses on the process of becoming a B Corp, through the study of the case of Manipedi, a Portuguese nails spa aiming to empower and give a stable job to talented and driven women living in difficult life conditions. By certifying into a B Corp, Manipedi ensures that its social mission is kept and will not be jeopardized over profits. The necessary changes a company must perform in order to become a B Corp vary from company to company, according to its characteristics and mission. Besides, the basis to become a B Corp is to improve social and environmental issues, which vary with external and internal factors to the firm. This way, there is no equal path when becoming a B Corp, but a continuous and progressive journey which each firm must shape according to its characteristics.
- Pestana Group new challenge : the marketing effect of Pestana CR7 HotelsPublication . Marques, Patrícia Várzea Segurado; Celeste, Pedro Manuel Amador RodriguesThe hotel industry has grown a lot in recent years, and this growth is likely to continue in the future. For a hotel to be competitive in an saturated market, it is necessary to develop strategies to attract the customers while maintaining the standards of quality and excellence. So, a "lifestyle" hotel, that emerges from a partnership between the Pestana Group (Leader Chain in Portugal) and Cristiano Ronaldo (the best football player in the world), seems to have everything that is necessary to succeed. This dissertation aims to adress the consumers’ receptiveness and perceptions of this new hotel Pestana CR7 and how it can affect the Group as a whole. This new hotel is an extension of the Pestana brand created to differentiate itself and attract a new target, the "Millennials". This hotel is modern, digital, evokes Cristiano Ronaldo and sports, offering an unforgettable experience - Living as CR7. Using the player as a celebrity endorser and the association with a Group that has a success history is enough to attract "Millennials". Moreover, the extension positions Pestana Group as innovative, young and attentive to the marked needs. The results of this dissertation prove that this association is advantageous, since the clients look for the experience that the hotel has to offer. Finally, this association allows the Pestana Group to expand with low costs and simultaneously generates awareness abroad.
- To what extent does the implementation of a category management program influence retail pharmacies' current model?Publication . Dias, Daniela Sofia Reis; Celeste, Pedro Manuel Amador RodriguesAs a result of structural changes that affected the retail pharmacy market and completely altered its competitive landscape, pharmacies are now actively seeking to strategically counterpoint these events. ANF, as the national association for pharmacies in Portugal, is an organization that, among other services, provides managerial support to associated pharmacies. By associating themselves with ANF, these pharmacies become part of the Farmácias Portuguesas brand. This study focuses on ANF’s latest project, the creation of a Category Management Program, which is expected to become available to all pharmacies associated to ANF (thus part of the Farmácias Portuguesas’ Channel). By studying the program’s reach and impact on these independent business units, conclusions are reached regarding its results in the current business model followed, and how this may translate into counterpointing competitors’ actions.
- Social impact bond feasibility study of ‘Mais Proximidade, Melhor Vida’Publication . Mina, Gonçalo Manuel Mourão; Santos, Filipe Manuel Simões dos; Miguel, AntónioLoneliness and Social Isolation in older people, a growing social problem with strong economic impact, should be tackled in a preventative way through interventions in individuals considered lonely or being at higher risk of becoming lonely. ‘Mais Proximidade, Melhor Vida’ is a good example of such an intervention that was validated by AMPMV in Lisbon and is intended to replicate in Oporto. The aim of this thesis is to explore whether a Social Impact Bond (SIB), a new social innovative financing mechanism, is a suitable way of financing the growth of the intervention of AMPMV and to model a SIB proposal.
