- An analysis on the interaction between migration and redistributive policiesPublication . Passanha, Vasco Maria Ferraz da Costa Maldonado; Braga, Teresa Lloyd; Monteiro, Manuel LeiteThis study tries to explain a cause and effect chain, how does a redistributive policy impacts on migration, and how does migration impacts on the wages of the different agents in the two economies under analysis. The model in use has two countries identical in all aspects except that one has a tax/subsidy scheme and the other does not. There are two types of workers, skilled and unskilled, and only the skilled workers have the possibility to migrate. The tax is charged proportionally on the skilled workers’ wage and then distributed, lump sum, among the unskilled workers. Findings show that there is a range of values for the tax to maximize the unskilled workers wage of the country where the tax is launched that goes in line with the ones reported by OECD (2012). Another finding is that there is a reduction on the wage gap between the two types of workers in the country where there is no tax.
- EDPR case study : exploring the brazilian marketPublication . Pereira, Henrique Franco Crespo; Cardeal, Nuno César de Jesus GuerraThis case study has been prepared on a real business scenario, where “Energias de Portugal Renováveis (EDPR)” was chosen, to serve as a teaching example of the task of developing a growth strategy, with emphasis on a particular country. EDPR, one of the leading wind energy companies in the world, is present in twelve countries and is the third-largest generator of wind energy globally. By the end of December 2014, EDPR had a global portfolio of 9.0 GW. Its growth and internationalization process require an analysis of each country and its specifications, considering the different macro-economic conditions. The renewables industry has a major role in the future of the electricity sector. The necessary strict control over Co2 emissions, the diversification of energy sources through ambitious world commitments and the price decreases in some renewable sources, lead to a promising and continuous development of this sector. The Brazilian Renewable Industry has a significant weight in the global renewable energy development, since it is one of the largest hydropower electricity country generators, with a vast solar and wind potential. However, its development in the future years is not certain, due to the current country´s economic and political state. This case study aims to develop a future growth strategy for EDPR Brazil, based on their current asset portfolio, investment plan and perception of the country’s future economic and political condition. Thus, one must also bear in mind EDPRs international growth strategy, in order to develop a coherent growth strategy for Brazil.
- Oureanafin group : Oureanafin and the struggle against bankruptcyPublication .
- The negative effects of monetary expansion on long-run economic growth : evidence from Southern and Northern-central European countriesPublication . Bulckaen, Alessio; Neves, João César das; Modesto, Leonor; Oikonomou, RigasThis thesis investigates the effects of monetary expansionary policy on the economy following the Austrian Theory of Business Cycles. In accordance with this school of thought, the interventions of monetary authorities are believed to have adverse effects on the sustainable path of economic growth. Attempting to mitigate business cycles, liquidity injections intensify fluctuation in the long run. The origin of the Neo-Austrians’ approach and its differences with mainstream economic arguments, are described in the first part of the thesis. In the second part, I will study the cases of three Northern-central European countries and, for the first time, three Southern European countries: Germany, Netherlands and Belgium, as well as Italy, Spain and Portugal. The results obtained are consistent with the idea that the injection of ex-nihilo credit in the system creates internal disequilibria in the economy. The unbalances eventually lead to unproductive investment of the available resources and slow down the economic growth. In the short term monetary expansions brings about an economic boom since both the output and investment increase due to the higher level of capital in circulation. But the economy is operating on a fragile base since the resources invested are not backed up by real saving but created out of thin air. In the long run the inconsistency between produced consumable output and consumption preferences leads to an economic recession. Austrian economists advocate for a laisser-faire economy, free from any regulatory intervention. They believe that greater interferences in the markets, lead to more severe recessionary effects.
- Large companies’ relevance in trade missions : impact on SMEs : a qualitative study on portuguese trade missionsPublication . Silva, Sofia Bernardo Fernandes Martins da; Cardeal, Nuno César de Jesus GuerraCompeting in international markets used to be almost exclusive of large companies. Nowadays, this idea is utterly outdated and the internationalization of small and mediumsized enterprises is the order of the day. Governments acknowledged the importance of helping these companies in their path towards external markets, especially in the current moment, in which the effects of the European debt crisis are affecting the business community. Trade missions are part of the export promotion programs – state-owned or private - which have the ultimate goal of leveraging internationalization of firms. This dissertation intends to go deeper in the research on trade missions, trying to understand the role of large firms and their possible contributions for these export promotion tool. For that purpose, interviews were conducted to Portuguese export promotion agencies, large companies and SMEs. It was observed large companies are frequent participants of these events and they help in the promotion of the missions both in Portugal and in the host countries, having a similar role to government members. Despite that, we found small and medium-sized enterprises do not have much direct benefits from the interaction with larger companies. Networking between large firms and SMEs has much more potential than what is verified in current trade missions and should be encouraged.
