- Assessing health endowment, access and choice determinants : impact on retired Europeans’ (in)activity and quality of lifePublication . Rebelo, Luis Pina; Pereira, Nuno SousaA future for the E.U., dominated by an ever-increasing population of retired citizens represents a major challenge to social and health policy in European countries. Under Rowe and Kahn’s (Gerontol 37(4):433–440, 1997) perspective on positive aging, this paper is interested in exploring the role of health on citizens’ active participation after retirement and social engagement to life and quality of life. This paper also aims at finding whether Sen’s (Public health, ethics, and equity. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2004) capability approach or cumulative disadvantage or advantage theory relative to the access to health also verifies in a context of multi-national developed economies. The first part of this study is therefore concerned with generating a health indicator that enables this, whilst controlling for individual heterogeneity in self-rated health responses from 10,859 retired individuals from the SHARE survey. Socioeconomic determinants of health are found not to be critical in determining health in such a developed context whilst cumulative advantage is found relevant for the positive aging of Europeans. Evidence is found that active engagement in activities and quality of life are most certainly a prerogative for the more educated and the healthier retirees, hinting a strategy for European policymakers: cumulative advantage, leveraged by education and health policy, might just be the long-term strategy for contouring an aging and unproductive European population, transforming what could be a ‘burden’ into an asset.

- Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 as a potential probiotic incorporated in a liquid system for vaginal deliveryPublication . Borges, S.; Teixeira, P.Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 is a bacteriocinogenic culture having potential use as a vaginal probiotic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of P. pentosaceus SB83 incorporated in a liquid system for eventually formulating a gel for vaginal delivery. The vaginal probiotic incorporated into glycerol was able to survive in simulated vaginal fluid at normal vaginal pH (4.2) and at pH of vaginal infections (5.5 and 6.5). The probiotic can be stored at 4 °C for a longer period of time than at room temperature, however, after 13 weeks of storage at low temperature, there was a total loss of viable cells. The probiotic strain incorporated into glycerol showed bacteriocinogenic activity in simulated vaginal fluid, although the antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes declined during storage. This study showed the behaviour of P. pentosaceus SB83 in glycerol and in simulated vaginal fluid. However, it is necessary to optimise the formulation to produce an actively probiotic vaginal gel.
- Restructuring and merger wavesPublication . Rodrigues, VascoAlthough merger waves are one of the most important market structures shaping forces, they have been the object of little theoretical investigation in industrial economics. This paper explains how the occurrence of industry merger waves is determined by the interplay between the synergy opportunities offered by mergers and the possibility to free-ride other firms’ mergers market power effects. This explanation arises in the context of a two-stage model in which mergers are endogenously determined before firms compete in the product ’s market. The endogenous market structure can either be excessively or insufficiently concentrated from a total surplus perspective.

- Peer influence in the diffusion of iPhone 3G over a large social networkPublication . Matos, Miguel Godinho de; Ferreira, Pedro; Krackhardt, DavidIn this paper, we study the effect of peer influence in the diffusion of the iPhone 3G across a number of communities sampled from a large dataset provided by a major European Mobile carrier in one country. We identify tight communities of users in which peer influence may play a role and use instrumental variables to control for potential correlation between unobserved subscriber heterogeneity and friends' adoption. We provide evidence that the propensity of a subscriber to adopt increases with the percentage of friends who have already adopted. During a period of 11 months, we estimate that 14 percent of iPhone 3Gs sold by this carrier were due to peer influence. This result is obtained after controlling for social clustering, gender, previous adoption of mobile Internet data plans, ownership of technologically advanced handsets, and heterogeneity in the regions where subscribers move during the day and spend most of their evenings. This result remains qualitatively unchanged when we control for changes over time in the structure of the social network. We provide results from several policy experiments showing that, with this level of effect of peer influence, the carrier would have hardly benefitted from using traditional marketing strategies to seed the iPhone 3G to benefit from viral marketing.
