- 5th Portuguese-Brazilian Conference on Conservation and Restoration: an introductory notePublication . Aguiar, Maria; Sousa, Gonçalo Vasconcelos e; Teixeira, Joana; Soares, Maria LuísaAt the end of 2019, the 5th edition of the Portuguese-Brazilian Conference on Conservation and Restoration took place, and was organized by CITAR (Catholic University of Portugal) in collaboration with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. During the 9th and 10th of December topics were discussed related to recent events, such as the tragic fire in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, which occurred just over a year earlier; to the challenges posed by the conservation of new media art, contemporary art and scientific collections, as well as to the preservation of so-called more "traditional" cultural assets; without neglecting the necessary joint reflections about training on conservation and restoration on both sides of the Atlantic.
- Collecting and preserving media art in Portuguese museumsPublication . Direito, Eva; Sá, Cristina; Teixeira, JoanaThis research aims to map the practices surrounding the collection of media art in Portuguese museums, with a particular focus on the preservation strategies employed by relevant institutions. At the core of the study is a critical analysis of data gathered through an online survey, completed by the following institutions: Museu da Bienal de Cerveira, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Ser-ralves, Centro de Arte Oliva, Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado, and Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado. The findings indicate a significant shortage of specialized conservators in Portugal, along with a lack of standardized terminology in the preservation of media art. The brevity of the sample suggests a lack of transparency from the institutions and limited public access to digital documentation con-cerning our object of study. Nonetheless, this sample provides valuable insight into current practises that typically remain inaccessible to the public.

- Language skills in children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes: a systematic reviewPublication . Teixeira, Joana; Santos, Maria EmíliaBenign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is the epileptic syndrome that most affects preschool and school-age children. Despite being usually considered a benign condition, several studies have shown that this epileptic syndrome is responsible for cognitive morbidities in children, namely at the level of attention and memory, as well as language. However, language disorders are still superficially addressed by the literature. This review aimed to compile and synthesize recent literature in this area. This systematic bibliographic research comprises studies published between 2005 and 2016 in PubMed, Science Direct, and PsycInfo computer databases that included the keywords “language”, “cognition”, “benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes”, “rolandic epilepsy”, and “children”. Studies were selected according to the following criteria: (i) published in scientific peer reviewed journals; (ii) performed with children between the ages of 3 and 16 years; and (iii) performed in children with BECTS in the active phase or after remission. Eighteen studies met these criteria. Nine studies mentioned language skill disorders in children with BECTS in the receptive and productive domains of semantics and seven studies in morphosyntax. Regarding phonological awareness, six studies have found limitations in the intrasyllabic, syllabic, and phonemic levels. These studies have also detected deficits in verbal fluency (semantic and phonemic) and in verbal memory. Because of the heterogeneity of the study samples and the use of innumerable distinct tasks in the evaluation of language skills, the results obtained still show some lack of consensus regarding the affected areas. Despite this, it was possible to synthesize and define more precisely the oral language variations presented by this population. We have concluded that the changes in semantic skills are the most frequently mentioned. The studies have also showed morphosyntactic and phonological disorders, in spite of showing some variability among them.

- The use of Tylose® MH 300 in the chromatic reintegration of matte contemporary pictorial surfacesPublication . Diniz, Joana; Teixeira, JoanaThe chromatic reintegration of contemporary artworks poses countless challenges due to the artist’s usage of new techniques and materials, many of which were not developed for artistic use. Among the main issues found at the retouching phase are the use of incompatible materials, the use of modern paints with intense saturation and finely ground pigments, the use of specific textures, the presence of colour fields and flat uniform surfaces, the absence or excess of gloss in the paints, and the choice of leaving the painting unvarnished. All these factors result in surfaces that are extremely susceptible to physical and chemical damage and that tend to present alterations and losses that interfere with the comprehension of the artworks. Therefore, matte contemporary pictorial surfaces demand an inpainting material that grants a range of visual possibilities while still being reversible, allowing for treatments in the future without causing damage to the original pictorial layer. To find such a material, several binders were prepared into samples, put through natural and accelerated aging tests, and evaluated for physical stability, chromatic and gloss variations, solubility and removability. One presented outstanding results: Tylose® MH 300 P2, a water-soluble non-ionic cellulose ether used as an adhesive for artworks on paper. Its results were noticeable: highly matte and stable, with positive results on chromatic stability. To validate the tests’ results in a practical context, Tylose® was used as a retouching binder for two artworks presenting characteristic problems of matte-surfaced artworks. It proved to be greatly versatile, and easy to prepare and handle. Tylose® is an unusual material for chromatic reintegration, not present in the literature as such, and has shown to be adequate, obtaining excellent results in tests, chromatic adjustments and a matte finish. Thus, this research aims that Tylose® becomes a viable alternative binder for retouching matte-surfaced artworks.
- Use of magnetic sheets in vertical deformation treatment of textile supports of contemporary paintingsPublication . Teixeira, JoanaThe practice developed during a conservation and restoration intervention does not always follow common or traditional standards, whether due to technical limitations, or space constraints related to the size of the works, or by the material requirements that the works themselves can present. In the light of various particularities and needs, research was initiated into the use of harmless and satisfactory methods in the occasional treatment of deformations of the support of contemporary pictorial works, using magnetic sheets. In its use, different valences were evaluated, such as the control in the iteration of the work, the effectiveness and control of humidity and time during the performance of the treatments, and the results obtained. This article will reflect on the process developed with the application of four case studies, presenting the advantages and disadvantages in the use of this method.
