- Early warning signs of adolescents aggressive behavior risk in institutional setting: a scoping review protocolPublication . Ferreira, António; Fluttert, Frans; Cardoso, Tiago; Rosa, Amorim; Sá, LuísAim: The main objective of the review is to map the literature on the warning signs of aggressive behaviour in adolescent inpatients in an institutional setting. Introduction Aggressive behaviour, self ou directed to others is a problem in the context of healthcare. Although they can be spontaneous, most of them are escalating behaviours manifested by warning signs, which, through early identification by nurses, allows for early intervention with an impact on the use of restrictive methods. However, there are gaps in research into these signs, particularly in the adolescent population. Inclusion criteria: The question formulation framework PCC was adopted, with P being the population (adolescents, aged 10 to 19 inclusive), C the concept (warning signs of aggressive behaviour) and C the context (institutions for adolescents). Methodology: The scoping review protocol will adopt the methodology proposed by the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The search will be carried out in CINAHL Complete, APA PsycArticles, PUBMED and Scopus, via an EBSCO interface and the search strategy will be carried out in accordance with the respective databases/repositories. Titles and abstracts of published and unpublished studies will be analysed within the inclusion criteria. The process of selecting, extracting and analysing the data will be carried out by three independent reviewers. Results: The results will be presented in tabular and narrative form. Conclusions: This scoping review will contribute to identify the warning signs of aggressive behaviour for adolescents in an institutional setting, enhancing nurses' early intervention in preventing and managing the risk of these behaviours occurring.
- Risk management of aggressive behaviors in mental health units for adolescentsPublication . Ferreira, António; Maravilha, André; Tomás, João; Fluttert, Frans; Rosa, Amorim; Sá, LuísAim: The aim of this review is to map the existing research on the interventions carried out by nurses in managing the risk of aggressive behavior in adolescent healthcare units. Introduction: Research on aggressive behaviors in healthcare units for adolescents with mental illness is considered a neglected area. These behaviors have an impact on staff, patients and on the therapeutic millieu, requiring interventions by the nursing staff for their risk management, in order to mitigate the adverse consequences they generate on safety and quality of care. Objective: The aim of this review is to map the existing research on the interventions carried out by nurses in managing the risk of aggressive behavior in adolescent health units. Methods: A scoping review will be conducted regarding the methodological framework proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The search strategy will be refined to identify pertinent studies was performed accordingly to each database/repository. Titles and abstracts of published and unpublished studies will be assessed in line with the eligibility criteria. The data selection, extraction and analysis process will be performed by three independent reviewers. Results: This scoping review protocol will include quantitative, qualitative and mixed method studies. Primary studies, systematic reviews, dissertations, opinion texts and gray literature will be considered regarding the three steps defined by JBI for scoping reviews. Conclusions: This review incorporate knowledge about nursing interventions for risk management of aggressive behaviors, focused in prevention, early intervention, but also programs with improved outcomes to the patient, staff and therapeutic milieu, promoting less coercive interventions. - Risk management of aggressive behaviors in mental health units for adolescents: a scoping reviewPublication . Ferreira, António; Maravilha, André; Fluttert, Frans; Rosa, Amorim; Sousa, Luís; Tomás, João; Sá, LuísIntroduction: Research on aggressive behaviors (ABs) in adolescent mental healthcare settings remains limited and underexplored. Such behaviors significantly affect staff, patients, and the therapeutic environment, necessitating nursing interventions for effective risk management to reduce their adverse impact on safety and quality of care. Objective: This review aimed to map the existing evidence on nursing interventions for the risk management of AB in adolescent mental health units. Methods: A search strategy was used to identify relevant studies in databases, respecting the Participant/Concept/Context (PCC) question formulation structure. This review covers studies describing nursing risk management strategies for adolescents (10 to 19 years old) with aggression problems and admitted to mental healthcare units. Results: From the 499 records initially identified, 9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for review, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and its associated flow diagram. The nursing interventions identified for managing AB in adolescent healthcare settings included risk assessment tools, targeted risk management strategies, evidence-based interventions but also various forms of coercive measures. Conclusions: This review integrates current knowledge on nursing interventions for the risk management of AB in adolescent mental health units. The focus of these interventions is prevention, by early intervention strategies but also intervention programs with improved outcomes for the patient, staff and therapeutic milieu, promoting less coercive interventions and increased care quality and safety.
