- Core components of rehabilitating children with brain cancer using exergames: a scoping reviewPublication . Ribeiro, Catarina Dias; Barbosa, Pedro José; Marques, Goreti; Almeida, Sofia; Padilha, José MiguelIntroduction: Child cancer is a rare phenomenon carrying alterations in physical condition, that influence the way they develop. Due to the implications resulting from brain tumors it is necessary to define, implement and evaluate interventions that minimize the functional impact on the child, speci-fically those that utilize exergames. So, the aim of this study is to map the literature related to the use of exergames in the motor rehabilitation of school--aged children with brain tumors. Methodology: Scoping Review method, according to Joanna Briggs Institute. Two independent re-viewers carried out the review which included studies incorporating school-aged children with a brain tumor, who resorted to exergames in motor rehabilitation programs. Research was carried out without a time limit, accessing to EBSCOHost, Web of Science, Scopus, and grey literature. Results: Three publications were included. The intervention varied between 8 to 12 weeks including 3 to 5 sessions per week, with an estimated time of 30 to 45 minutes per session. The most used gaming platform was Nintendo® Wii. Several evaluation tools have been applied, to obtain data about physical fitness, functionality, quality of life, neuropsy-chological state, and self-concept. Discussion: Intervention programs differ one from another, particularly in the criteria for their pres-cription, duration, and assessment tools, as well as the game platforms used. The programs are evalua-ted at an early stage and at the end and can be ex-tended up to 3 months after the end of the program. Conclusion: Further investigation should be carried to examine the characteristics of interventions aimed at children with cancer, namely the frequen-cy, intensity, type, and duration of physical exercise, as well as the influence of exergames on the rehabilitation of children with brain tumors. The scarcity of research on this topic justifies investing in primary studies to clarify the impact of the intervention of specialist nurses in Rehabilitation Nursing in this field. The analysis of interventions that can be implemented by specialist nurses for children with cancer is an emerging issue, to promote infor-med decision-making in Rehabilitation Nursing, as well as to identify priority areas for research.

Almeida, Sofia; Pinto, Elisabete; Correia, Marta; Veiga, Nélio; Almeida, ArmandoBackground: The main objective of the present study was to assess e-health literacy in a sample of Portuguese university students and its association with the level of knowledge and seeking for COVID-19-related information. Methods: This cross-sectional online study was conducted on Portuguese university students. All students completed a questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, e-health Literacy Scale (eHEALS), and a questionnaire about knowledge, attitude, and health online information seeking. Results: A total of 534 students (76.8% women), with a mean age of 24.3 years old (SD = 7.8), participated in this cross-sectional study, 53.0% of students were from non-health sciences. The mean score of eHEALS literacy was 28.8 (SD = 5.6). Most students (71.1%) classified the Internet as a useful, or very useful, tool in helping them make health related decisions. The use of the Internet as a tool to research health information for a period of two or more hours (OR = 1.9; CI 95% = 1.2; 3.4), to search online for health information on professional websites (OR = 2.3; CI 95% = 1.4; 3.6), to search in official media (OR = 2.3; CI 95% = 1.4; 3.9), and to study in the field of health sciences (OR = 1.6; CI 95% = 1.1; 2.6) increased the likelihood of having sufficient e-health literacy. Conclusion: From a public health perspective, there is a need to develop programs that increase health literacy among university students.
- Psychometric properties of the healthy lifestyle behaviors scale in Portuguese pregnant womenPublication . Nunes, Maria Arminda; Melnyk, Bernadette Mazurek; Almeida, Sofia; Cardoso, Alexandrina; Vieira, MargaridaBackground: Pregnancy provides a privileged and opportune moment to implement interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors and significantly improving perinatal outcomes. The Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBES) can be used to assess health promoting behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and mental health. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the HLBES in Portuguese pregnant women. Methods: A methodological study was conducted on a convenience sample of 192 pregnant women receiving prenatal care. After cross-cultural adaptation, an exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency assessment were carried out to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale. Data collected included the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale to assess the HLBES’ criterion validity. Results: Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation yielded 2 subscales that explained 45.23% of the total variance. The scale revealed an overall internal consistency of 0.78 and a good criterion validity with the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale (r = 0.65, P <.01). Conclusion: Our results suggest that the HLBES is an instrument for reporting healthy lifestyle behaviors in Portuguese pregnant women; however, further studies are recommended. This scale can be used to not only describe healthy lifestyle behaviors in pregnant women but also to determine the effects of health promoting interventions.
- Relationship of the nursing practice environment with the quality of care and patients’ safety in primary health carePublication . Lucas, Pedro; Jesus, Élvio; Almeida, Sofia; Araújo, BeatrizBackground: Nursing practice environment has impact on the quality of nursing care and on patients’ and nurses’ outcomes, namely better performances of these healthcare workers. Improving the nursing practice environment is a low-cost organizational strategy to achieve better patients’ outcomes and retain qualified nurses, thus improving nursing care of units, healthcare organizations and healthcare system. This study aims to analyse the relationship between nursing practice environment and the nurses` perception of quality of care, patient safety, and safety culture in Primary Health Care in Portugal. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, analytical, and cross-sectional study using data from RN4CAST Portugal. The sample was composed of 1059 nurses from 55 Health Center Groups of the mainland Portugal, 15 Health Centers of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and 6 Health Centers of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Multivariate analysis and correlation analysis methods were used for data processing. Results: Nurses consider that, in the Portuguese Primary Health Care, there is a mixed and unfavourable nursing practice environment, with a perception of a good quality of care, and both acceptable patients’ safety and safety culture. The Collegial Nurse-Physician Relations and Nursing Foundations for Quality of Care dimensions to have the best ratings. The perception of Primary Health Care nurses on the dimension Nurse Participation in Organization Affairs was the one that showed the lowest score, followed by Staffing and Resource Adequacy and Nurse Manager Ability, Leadership, and Support of Nurses. Based on perception of nurses, the relationship between the nursing practice environment and the safety culture is higher, followed by the quality of care and patients’ safety. Conclusions: The perception of Primary Health Care nurses is that there is an unfavourable and mixed nursing practice environment, with good quality of care, and acceptable patient safety and safety culture. The quality of the nursing practice environments is associated to better quality and safety of care. Thus, improving the nursing practice environments in healthcare organizations is a low-cost organizational strategy to achieve greater patients and nurses’ outcomes, improving the quality of nursing care to patients in the Primary Health Care units.

- Translation, adaptation, and validation of the Portuguese version of the exercise of self-care agency scalePublication . Cunha, Fátima; Pinto, Maria do Rosário; Riesch, Susan; Lucas, Pedro; Almeida, Sofia; Vieira, MargaridaAbstract: Assessing a person’s capacity to engage in self-care behaviours is another added value in identifying one’s potential to care for oneself in the health domain that contributes to planning person-centred care. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Exercise of Self-Care Agency (ESCA) Scale by Kearney and Fleischer, revised by Riesch and Hauck for the Portuguese version, using a sample of 625 elderly people living at home in Portugal. A cross-cultural adaptation process follows the stages of translation, synthesis, back-translation, and consensual solution for the translation process and pretesting. Construct validity was tested using exploratory factor analysis, and factor structure was subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was determined by analysing internal consistency, resorting to Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. This resulted in an instrument formed of 29 items, keeping the factor structure conceptually aligned with the underlying theory. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient values were 0.87 for the global scale and varied between 0.65 and 0.84 for the subscales. The final four-factor model showed an acceptable quality of fit. The Portuguese version of the ESCA shows appropriate validity and reliability for use in future research and health contexts.
- Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of measurement instruments: a practical guideline for novice researchersPublication . On Behalf of the Handovers4SafeCare; Cruchinho, Paulo; López-Franco, María Dolores; Capelas, Manuel Luís; Almeida, Sofia; Bennett, Phillippa May; Silva, Marcelle Miranda de; Teixeira, Gisela; Nunes, Elisabete; Lucas, Pedro; Gaspar, FilomenaCross-cultural validation of self-reported measurement instruments for research is a long and complex process, which involves specific risks of bias that could affect the research process and results. Furthermore, it requires researchers to have a wide range of technical knowledge about the translation, adaptation and pre-test aspects, their purposes and options, about the different psychometric properties, and the required evidence for their assessment and knowledge about the quantitative data processing and analysis using statistical software. This article aimed: 1) identify all guidelines and recommendations for translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation within the healthcare sciences; 2) describe the methodological approaches established in these guidelines for conducting translation, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation; and 3) provide a practical guideline featuring various methodological options for novice researchers involved in translating, adapting, and validating measurement instruments. Forty-two guidelines on translation, adaptation, or cross-cultural validation of measurement instruments were obtained from “CINAHL with Full Text” (via EBSCO) and “MEDLINE with Full Text”. A content analysis was conducted to identify the similarities and differences in the methodological approaches recommended. Bases on these similarities and differences, we proposed an eight-step guideline that includes: a) forward translation; 2) synthesis of translations; 3) back translation; 4) harmonization; 5) pre-testing; 6) field testing; 7) psychometric validation, and 8) analysis of psychometric properties. It is a practical guideline because it provides extensive and comprehensive information on the methodological approaches available to researchers. This is the first methodological literature review carried out in the healthcare sciences regarding the methodological approaches recommended by existing guidelines.
