- Reframing relational space. Migration from the perspective of those ‘who stay’Publication . Barros, Carlos; Hanenberg, Peter; Santos, Ana SofiaMigratory research projects are increasingly concerned with bringing together those ‘who go’ and those ‘who stay’, considering the impact of living in transnational family relationships. The perception and use of space have moved between digital and face-to-face spaces in the management of these dynamics. Considering that Portugal has both a high rate of ageing and a high number of young adult emigrants, it is important to explore how parental figures in Portugal and young adult children abroad re-signify their presence. In this paper, we intend to reflect on how parental figures in Portugal use digital and face-to-face presence to connect with their emigrated children and how that might re-signify the space with the community where they live. Using a post-positivist paradigm and semi-structured interviews, we developed a qualitative study with parental figures living in Portugal and their adult children living abroad (N = 20, age M = 60, 83; DP = 9, 15). We analysed the data using the software N-Vivo (ed. 14). The general results point to the inclusion of digital space as a dimension for the negotiation of space–time within family rituals. In this sense, digital platforms and devices gain importance in the maintenance of communication and the planning of routines or celebrations. The dynamics of these family groups are influenced by the perception of social values and norms. The presence established between the digital and the physical seems to be important in (a) decreasing the impact of isolation and increasing participants’ sense of belonging, (b) promoting cross-cultural values, and (c) encouraging participants to use digital tools to connect with other groups in their communities.
- Rethinking teacher training from an inclusive and community dialogical perspectivePublication . Morgado, Elsa Gabriel; Rodrigues, João Bartolomeu; Leonido, LeviThis quantitative survey using a structured questionnaire with closed questions and a sample of 340 participants from 20 courses (bachelor's and master's degrees) at public higher education institutions in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region of the Portuguese university (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro) and polytechnic (Polytechnic Institute of Bragança) subsystem aims to list a group of proposals for reflection and future implementation that can fill or mitigate gaps and weaknesses identified in the disciplines of the curricula related to internships. The analysis of the data reveals indicators indicating the need for a (formal and conceptual) rethinking of inclusive intervention in the context of supervision in the field of teacher training. These indicators include problems with operating in a multifaceted educational setting, enhancing an interdisciplinary, integrated and inclusive approach, rearranging curriculum and reconsidering the functional profiles and competencies of teaching staff. Therefore, the construction of a professional culture that favors an integrative and inclusive approach through the assumption of a broad profile of professional competence capable of training the teacher in a multidimensional educational context is crucial. We evaluate the necessity of encouraging research of this type involving additional factors, populations and samples in order to enable the extrapolation of data and findings to a national level providing significance and technological foundations for decisions made within the context of public education policy.

- Beijing’s maritime strategy in the South China SeaPublication . Pinho, Catarina Leite de Faria Abreu de; Monjardino, MiguelThe present study aims to analyse, evaluate, and comprehend some of the main factors that may explain China’s strategic aspiration to become a Great Maritime Power. Using historical background within the approaches applied during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it will try to better identify the origins of this ambition. Afterwards, we will focus on the methods that are being used in the contemporary era with the aim of giving China a sturdy, undisputed, and prominent place in the world arena. Finally, we will try to present the key points so that we can understand why China wants to be a dominant great maritime power. For this dissertation I will use a geopolitical and strategic studies methodology. Since China is gaining a greater importance worldwide having more and more countries engaged or interdependent economically, commercially, or politically with it every day, we believe this to be an important topic to analyse and discuss, mainly from the perspective of a western outlook, and most important from a European citizen, since it can give to this dissertation a perspective from an outsider. However, this theme also has implications in the European level and that is why it is also important to raise awareness to it. In the final remarks, we will seek to conclude specifying the reasons that have led China, over the centuries to this day, to adopt a maritime strategy for the 21st century and how this choice has influences Beijing’s foreign policy. We are going to focus on five main topics — What is Maritime Power?, History – Ancient China and the Sea, China Dream, Modernisation of the Chinese Navy, and The 21st Century Thucydides Trap.
- Evaluating e-health literacy, knowledge, attitude, and health online information in Portuguese university students: a cross-sectional studyPublication . Almeida, Sofia; Pinto, Elisabete; Correia, Marta; Veiga, Nélio; Almeida, ArmandoBackground: The main objective of the present study was to assess e-health literacy in a sample of Portuguese university students and its association with the level of knowledge and seeking for COVID-19-related information. Methods: This cross-sectional online study was conducted on Portuguese university students. All students completed a questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, e-health Literacy Scale (eHEALS), and a questionnaire about knowledge, attitude, and health online information seeking. Results: A total of 534 students (76.8% women), with a mean age of 24.3 years old (SD = 7.8), participated in this cross-sectional study, 53.0% of students were from non-health sciences. The mean score of eHEALS literacy was 28.8 (SD = 5.6). Most students (71.1%) classified the Internet as a useful, or very useful, tool in helping them make health related decisions. The use of the Internet as a tool to research health information for a period of two or more hours (OR = 1.9; CI 95% = 1.2; 3.4), to search online for health information on professional websites (OR = 2.3; CI 95% = 1.4; 3.6), to search in official media (OR = 2.3; CI 95% = 1.4; 3.9), and to study in the field of health sciences (OR = 1.6; CI 95% = 1.1; 2.6) increased the likelihood of having sufficient e-health literacy. Conclusion: From a public health perspective, there is a need to develop programs that increase health literacy among university students.
- An integral approach to well-being in transnational families: a brief proposal for best practicesPublication . Barros, Carlos; Hanenberg, PeterAlthough the study of migration has shifted its focus from an individual perspective (on those who emigrate) to also include their integration networks in the country of destination, it is also necessary to consider the dynamics with their family in the country of origin. With an integral focus on the analysis of Portuguese transnational families, this paper aims to reflect on how the connection between those who emigrate and those who stay can promote greater resilience, presenting best practices for intervention among these dynamics and generations. Using a post-positivist paradigm and semi-structured interviews, we developed a qualitative approach with three exploratory studies: 1) Portuguese young adults living abroad (N=22); 2) parental figures living in Portugal with adult children living abroad (N= 20) and 3) experts in the fields of academic and psychosocial work with similar persons (N= 8). The data was analyzed using N-Vivo software. The general results lead us to reflect on the dynamics of relationships, where digital and face-to-face spaces participate simultaneously, even though there are different challenges and ways of using digital means. We also found a change in expectations regarding the norms and values perceived by the generation of emigrants, which leads us to consider the importance of intercultural values since transnational families greatly increase transculturality, which can promote resilience among the group. The data also alerts us to the need to train intervention professionals in multidisciplinary areas, always taking the cultural context into account.
- Design and bioprinting of decellularized extracellular matrix-based bioinks for skin tissue engineeringPublication . Bebiano, Luís B.; Presa, Rafaela; Silva, Inês V.; Oliveira, Ana L.; Costa, João B.; Pereira, Rúben F.3D bioprinting is a powerful enabling technology for the automated fabrication of biomimetic constructs for skin modelling and repair with high resolution and reproducibility. Bioinks, which often comprise the combination of cells and printable biomaterials, are essential for bioprinting 3D cell-laden constructs emulating the architecture, composition and function of native skin. Tissue- and organ-specific decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) materials are assuming a significant role in bioink design owing their capacity to provide native biophysical and biochemical signals that can elicit distinct cellular responses toward tissue development. Herein, we discuss the rational design of dECM-based bioinks, focusing on processing methods to obtain dECM as well as on bioprinting strategies to engineer 3D constructs for applications in wound healing and in vitro skin modelling.
- A bioethical perspective on the meanings behind a wish to hasten death: a meta-ethnographic reviewPublication . Borges, Paulo J.; Hernández-Marrero, Pablo; Pereira, Sandra MartinsBackground: The expressions of a “wish to hasten death” or “wish to die” raise ethical concerns and challenges. These expressions are related to ethical principles intertwined within the field of medical ethics, particularly in end-of-life care. Although some reviews were conducted about this topic, none of them provides an in-depth analysis of the meanings behind the “wish to hasten death/die” based specifically on the ethical principles of autonomy, dignity, and vulnerability. The aim of this review is to understand if and how the meanings behind the “wish to hasten death/die” relate to and are interpreted in light of ethical principles in palliative care. Methods: We conducted a meta-ethnographic review according to the PRISMA guidelines and aligned with Noblit and Hare’s framework. Searches were performed in three databases, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, with no time restrictions. Original qualitative studies exploring the meanings given by patients, family caregivers and healthcare professionals in any context of palliative and end-of-life care were included. A narrative synthesis was undertaken. PROSPERO registration CRD42023360330. Results: Out of 893 retrieved articles, 26 were included in the analysis, accounting for the meanings of a total of 2,398 participants. Several factors and meanings associated with the “wish to hasten death” and/or “wish to die” were identified and are mainly of a psychosocial and spiritual nature. The ethical principles of autonomy and dignity were the ones mostly associated with the “wish to hasten death”. Ethical principles were essentially inferred from the content of included articles, although not explicitly stated as bioethical principles. Conclusions: This meta-ethnographic review shows a reduced number of qualitative studies on the “wish to hasten death” and/or “wish to die” explicitly stating ethical principles. This suggests a lack of bioethical reflection and reasoning in the empirical end-of-life literature and a lack of embedded ethics in clinical practice. There is a need for healthcare professionals to address these topics compassionately and ethically, taking into account the unique perspectives of patients and family members. More qualitative studies on the meanings behind a wish to hasten death, their ethical contours, ethical reasoning, and implications for clinical practice are needed.
- A espiritualidade mariana do sacerdotePublication .
- Organizational learning within the context of the functioning of educational teams: the progressive emergence of a professional metamorphosisPublication . Pinheiro, Generosa; Alves, José MatiasResponding to contemporary global challenges will require quality education, which presupposes changes in schools’ organizational structures, new roles and mentalities for the players involved and a culture of learning at the different levels of organizations. In this regard, we strive to understand how changing certain organizational structures, more specifically the organization of teaching by educational teams operating as professional learning communities, can have an impact on individual, collective and organizational learning at schools. To this end, we have adopted a qualitative research paradigm, put into operation through a case study, based on a qualitative-quantitative approach. We combined a descriptive statistical approach consisting of two questionnaires, which have been decoded and interpreted both structurally and semantically, with a content analysis of interviews, focused discussion groups and field diary notes, to examine a number of unique contexts and the perspectives of individual players. We concluded that a change in organizational structures is an essential but insufficient condition. What is needed is a change in the players’ beliefs and collaboration that provides deep learning. As such, a substantial change in education at the level of educational organization requires joint action at the levels of structure, middle leadership, beliefs and professional cultures.
