Abstract(s)
Este artigo tem por objectivo mostrar a importância das gárgulas figurativas nos edifícios religiosos no
nosso país, cuja interpretação discursiva e qualidade plástica é bastante significativa. Apesar disso, não atraiu até
agora a atenção dos nossos historiadores de arte. O nosso propósito é analisar algumas gárgulas que representam
a figura humana, na sua relação com os pecados (nomeadamente a luxúria e a gula) e com aspectos grotescos
e escatológicos. Daqui resulta uma importante vocação didáctica das mesmas, funcionando como exempla, mas
também estética e lúdica. As gárgulas cumprem funções pedagógicas e simbólicas, mantendo uma íntima relação
discursiva com o seu público-alvo, motivos mais que suficientes para a sua integração e legitimação.
This article aims to demonstrate the importance of the figurative gargoyles in the religious buildings in Portugal, whose interpretation and plastic qualities are very significant, in spite, art historians haven’t been attracted by the gargoyles theme. Our aim is to analyse some human shaped gargoyles, its relations with the sins (particularly lust and gluttony) and with grotesques and scatological aspects. There from, the gargoyles have an important didactic tendency, presenting themselves as exempla, but also with an aesthetic predisposition. The human gargoyles accomplish pedagogic and symbolic functions, maintaining an intimate relation with its public, more than enough reasons to its integration and justification in the churches and cathedrals.
