Abstract(s)
ansiedade social e a ideação e comportamento suicidário.
Emotional distress, such as depression, anger and anxiety, is related to suicidal behaviors among young adults. Social anxiety or social phobia is associated with difficulties in psychological functioning and social relationships, and several studies indicate that the prevalence of this condition in college students is common and is related to a set of social and psychological variables, including suicidal ideation. Given the scarcity of studies in the Portuguese population, this study aims to understand the relationship of anxiety and avoidance in social situations and performance in the ideation and suicidal behavior of a sample of Portuguese university students. The sample consisted of 235 Portuguese university students, aged between 18 and 25 years (average age = 20.03), who completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Anxiety and Avoidance Scale in Situations of Social Interaction and Performance and two items that evaluate ideation and suicide attempt. Females have higher mean scores on distress/anxiety and avoidance levels. There is also a higher percentage of female suicidal thoughts than suicide attempts. Anxiety and social avoidance positively and significantly correlate with attempted suicide. These preliminary results, however, show us the relationship between social anxiety and suicidal ideation and behavior. In future, longitudinal studies should be conducted to help guide prevention and/or intervention plans.
