O que é a Bitcoin e quais as suas implicações? Nesta tese é feita uma análise descritiva do ambiente e funcionamento da Bitcoin e uma análise teórica. Para tal, é desenvolvido um modelo em que é necessária moeda (Dólares e Bitcoins) para transações onde as moedas são substitutas imperfeitas. Para além disso é incluído um agente quem tem como objetivo maximizar lucros e dedica tempo à produção da Bitcoin. Derivo as condições de crescimento equilibrado desta economia e mostro que a Bitcoin pode ter implicações em termos de politica monetária, mais, o facto de o número de Bitcoins e a sua divisibilidade ser limitada irá ditar o colapso da moeda. Por fim, é relaxada a suposição de substituibilidade imperfeita e é introduzida incerteza no problema da família representativa o que permite mostrar que sob certas condições a taxa de câmbio da Bitcoin se comporta como um martingale.
What is the Bitcoin and what are its implications? In this thesis I do a descriptive analysis of the Bitcoin environment and functioning. I build a cash-in-advance model where two currencies (US dollar and Bitcoin) are useful for transactions and imperfect substitutes. Furthermore, I include a profit-maximizing agent that dedicates time in order to produce Bitcoins. I derive the balanced growth conditions of this economy and show that Bitcoin can have implications in terms of monetary policy. Moreover, Bitcoin’s fixed stock of currency and the lack of divisibility will result in its collapse. Finally, the assumption of imperfect substitutability is relaxed and it is introduced uncertainty to the problem of the representative household, and conclude that under certain conditions the price of Bitcoin is a martingale.
