Abstract(s)
Adolescence is a phase characterized by higher vulnerability to develop internalisation problems, such as anxiety and depression. Hence, the goal of the present research was to understand the relationship between internalisation problems, the struggle of emotional regulation, the wellbeing, family environment and the perception of the relationship’s quality with parents and peers in the adolescence stage. Differences between teenagers with higher and lower risk of internalisation problems, were explored, and the wellbeing mediator effect was tested on the struggle of emotional regulation, family environment (conflict, cohesion and support), the perception of the relationship’s quality with the parents and peers and the internalization problems. The studied group included 723 adolescents of both sexes, with ages between 12 and 18, from middle to high school, in 9 schools of the Great Lisbon area and S. Miguel Island (Azores). The participants completed a self-assessment survey which allowed the evaluation of the study’s variables. The results indicated that the problems of internalisation were positively associated with the struggle of emotional regulation and the family conflict as well as negatively associated with the wellbeing, perception of the relationship’s quality with the parents and peers, and with the family’s cohesion and support. The group with the higher risk of developing problems of internalisation, revealed higher struggle levels with emotional regulation, family conflict and a lower perception of the relationship’s quality with parents and peers as well as less family cohesion and support. The wellbeing’s mediator effect was established between the struggle with emotional regulation, family environment and the perception of the relationship’s quality with the parents and peers and the internalisation problems. These results provide relevant data for the clinical practice framework regarding intervention with adolescents, information that allows the design of psychopathology intervention programs and consequently the fostering of global wellbeing in adolescents. Some limitations and suggestions on future research were also addressed.
