Abstract(s)
Bishop D. José do Patrocínio Dias can be rightly considered the great restorer of the Diocese of Beja in the 20th century, after the severe ordeals endured by this Church with the expulsion of the Jesuits, the suppression of the religious orders and the establishment of the Republic. We’ll specially refer in this work that he was a man with a vision and we’ll stress the importance of his social work inspired by the teachings of the great popes, Pio XI, Pio XII and John XXIII and mainly by the Social Doctrine of the Church. Always concerned with the problems of his own time, D. José tried to reach consensuses among different opinions and to establish bridges between the central power and local forces, in order to generate synergies that could result in concrete answers to the real problems of the more impoverished populations belonging to the regions beyond the Tagus river, which constitute the South Alentejo Province.
