The object of this communication is the anthropologist’s role in local development. This is not a matter of peaceful discussion: the techno-scientific development is a universal concept whiles the notions of culture(s) that the anthropologist studies are particular. How to reconcile the universal character of techno - scientific development with the particular and diverse character of cultures? The aim of this communication is to discuss this issue in order to justify that role. There are economists who argue that investment in Portugal has been greatly undervalued, as if economic growth is only due to fiscal policy, to rising wages or to demand-related aspects. The key variable of economic growth, as others say, is "competitive investment," which improves the quality of what we do "in-house" and the quality of our participation in globalization. In the midst of quantitative economic variables, there is a human qualitative variable that emerge. It is through this variable that anthropologists can affirm their specific difference in the "competitive investment" implied in local development projects. What makes their specific quality? It is their methodological formation and practice, both scientific and artistic. Scientific, because they rely on the triple methodology of fieldwork, participant observation and comparative method. Artistic, because anthropologists appear to us, in their formation and in their methodological practices with the subjects of the contexts studied, as co - authors of creative projects of local development. In summary: the anthropologists plays a qualitative role in local development plans because, through its competences already mentioned, he can be seen as a mediator between the local population and the institutions from which those plans emanate.pt_PT
