CONCLUSÃO: As lesões orofaciais pós-traumáticas apresentaram elevada prevalência nesta população e associaram-se a sequelas e impacto funcional e psicossocial clinicamente relevantes.
reduzir a incidência, complicações e carga individual e social do trauma.
BACKGROUND: To estimate the prevalence of post-traumatic orofacial injuries in a population of students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FMDUCP) and characterize them regarding etiology, place of occurrence, affected tissues, presence of sequelae, and functional and psychosocial impact, as well as to explore perceptions about immediate management and the need for prevention related information. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between March and June 2025 using an online questionnaire (Qualtrics XM) administered to students enrolled in the 1st through 5th year of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Dental Medicine at FMDUCP. A total of 298 responses were obtained from a total population of 367 students. Data were coded in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 27. The significance level was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: The self-reported prevalence of post-traumatic orofacial injury was 39.9% (n=119). The main causes were falls (38.7%) and sports-related accidents (22.7%), occurring mainly in the street (44.5%) and at home (26.1%). Most participants reported consequences (82.3%), with temporary sequelae in 46.2% and permanent sequelae in 36.1%. Intra-oral (70.6%) and extra-oral (56.3%) injuries predominated; teeth were the most affected structures, and fractures were the most common type of dental injury. Trauma impacted the lives of 73% of participants, with functional limitation in 59.5% and emotional repercussions.
Gaps in immediate response were observed: 42.9% did not know how to act and a substantial proportion did not seek care; likewise, most respondents perceived limited public guidance and expressed interest in more preventive information. CONCLUSION: Post-traumatic orofacial injuries showed a high prevalence in this population and were associated with clinically relevant sequelae and functional and psychosocial impact. The findings highlight the need to implement preventive strategies and improve immediate management to reduce incidence,
complications, and the individual and societal burden of trauma.
