No contexto nórdico, embora existam estudos dedicados à arte pública, observa-se uma lacuna significativa na investigação centrada na conservação e na gestão dessas coleções. Esta dissertação incide sobre a coleção de arte pública da Universidade de Bergen, na Noruega, composta por aproximadamente 543 obras adquiridas com recursos públicos e doações, representativas da arte moderna e contemporânea norueguesa. As obras encontram-se distribuídas por todo o campus universitário, sendo uma parte substancial concebida como arte integrada ou diretamente relacionada com o edificado. A investigação propõe uma análise aprofundada das práticas de conservação e de documentação adotadas na gestão desta coleção. Procura-se identificar falhas nos processos de documentação que possam comprometer a conservação das obras, bem como discutir modelos e padrões de tomada de decisão aplicáveis à gestão da arte pública. Por meio de um estudo de caso, que analisa a remoção de uma obra integrada à arquitetura do edifício, a consequente perda ou transformação do seu significado e o processo da sua remontagem, pretende-se refletir sobre os impactos dessas intervenções na integridade material e simbólica da obra. Assim, a dissertação busca contribuir para uma compreensão mais abrangente dos desafios e das oportunidades associados à gestão e à conservação de coleções de arte pública no contexto institucional universitário.
In the Nordic context, although studies exist on public art, there is a notable gap in research focused on conserving and managing these collections. This dissertation centers on the public art collection at the University of Bergen, Norway, which includes approximately 543 works acquired with public funding and donations, representing Norwegian modern and contemporary art. The artworks are spread across the university campus, with many designed as art integrated into or directly linked to the buildings. The research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the conservation and documentation practices used in managing this collection. It seeks to identify issues in the documentation processes that could hinder the preservation of the works and to explore models and decision-making approaches relevant to public art management. Through a case study examining the removal of a work of art integrated into a specific building’s architecture, the resulting loss or alteration of its meaning, and the process of reassembling it, the study aims to reflect on how these interventions affect the work's material and symbolic integrity. Ultimately, this dissertation intends to contribute to a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in managing and conserving public art collections within a university setting.
