In social anxiety disorder, social situations are avoided or faced with intense fear or anxiety. Cognitive ideation is to be negatively evaluated or embarrassed and rejected by others. These thoughts have consequences on sleep quality, coexisting with sleep disturbances such as insomnia, which is the most prevalent sleep disorder. The overall objective of this research was to explore the role of social anxiety in insomnia and sleep quality in a sample of college students. This sample consisted of 231 university students, aged between 18 and 25 years (M = 20.02, SD = 1.67), who completed the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Social Interaction and Performance Anxiety and Avoidance Scale, and the Basic Scale on Insomnia and Quality of Sleep Insomnia and Sleep Quality. About 60% of the students were found to be poor sleepers. Regarding social anxiety, statistically significant differences were found as a function of gender, with females presenting higher scores than males, and from the school year, with the 1st year students presenting higher scores, on the other hand no differences were found. significant differences in BaSIQS. Avoidance was found to be a statistically significant predictor of poor sleep quality, even after controlling for gender and grade level. These results highlight the importance of studying the role of social anxiety in sleep quality, particularly in contexts that imply transition phases and pose challenges to subjects, such as the university context.
