| dc.description.abstract | This study engages in the debate found within the genre of artsci, the intersection between art and science, and more specifically with Visualizing the Invisible, the creative conjuncture of art with physics and its subsequent subfields. Following Arthur I. Miller on both accounts, it was undertaken in order to present a systematic approach to support artistic intervention(s) in the Invisible World that can transgress the cultural dichotomy between art and science and contribute to further development of artsci. The critical achievement of this dissertation is the description and analysis of a postulated practical modus operandi that combines the processes of artistic creation with theoretical concepts of Cognitive Culture Studies, applied to the field of Visualizing the Invisible. This could allow curators and artists to look critically at the cognitive aspects of their work, elucidate the processes of negotiation of their meaning, and adjust the processes of creation accordingly. The modus operandi has been identified on the basis of a multi-level analysis of the work by a collective of artists and scientists curated by me - Instytut B61, specifically, the immersive multimodal performance Ewolucja Gwiazd (eng. Evolution of Stars) presented in Poland and India. The first two chapters of the study can also be read as an independent contribution to the development of the academic field of artsci due to the theoretical attempt to define the cognitive boundaries of Visualizing the Invisible. The novelty and perspicacity of Arthur I. Miller’s writings on visual imagery and ideas that highlight how the human mind copes with scientific abstraction through visualization or visualizability, are of great importance for this part of the study. In my analysis of Visualizing the Invisible I apply methodologies of cognitive studies, translation studies, and semiotics, including different theories regarding cognitive metaphors and conceptual blends. Special attention is given to the cultural dynamics of such processes in addressing their mental, material, and social conditions. The result is a comprehensive study, that not only focuses on the case studies but also provides a relevant cultural, philosophical, and historical context for considerations about the possible influence of artsci on contemporary culture. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Este estudo foca–se no debate no âmbito do gênero artsci, a interseção entre arte e ciência, mais especificamente em Visualizing the Invisible, a conjuntura criativa da arte com a física e os seus subcampos subsequentes. Seguindo Arthur I. Miller em ambos os relatos, foi realizado com o objetivo de apresentar uma abordagem sistemática para apoiar intervenções artísticas no Mundo Invisível que possam transgredir a dicotomia cultural entre arte e ciência e contribuir para o desenvolvimento do artsci. O objetivo crítico desta dissertação é a descrição e análise de um modus operandi prático postulado que combina os processos de criação artística com conceitos teóricos de Cognitive Culture Studies, aplicados ao campo do Visualizing the Invisible. Esta abordagem poderia permitir que curadores e artistas olhassem criticamente para os aspectos cognitivos do seu trabalho, elucidassem os processos de negociação do seu significado e ajustassem os processos de criação corretamente. O modus operandi foi identificado com base em uma análise multinível do trabalho de um coletivo de artistas e cientistas com curadoria minha - Instytut B61, especificamente, a performance multimodal imersiva Ewolucja Gwiazd (eng. Evolution of Stars) apresentada na Polônia e na Índia. Os dois primeiros capítulos do estudo também podem ser tratados como uma contribuição independente para o desenvolvimento no âmbito acadêmico do artsci, devido à tentativa teórica de definir os limites cognitivos do Visualizing the Invisible. A novidade e perspicácia dos escritos de Arthur I. Miller sobre imagens visuais e ideias que destacam como a mente humana lida com a abstração científica através do visualization ou visualizibility são de grande importância para esta parte do estudo. Na minha análise de Visualizing the Invisible, aplico metodologias de estudos cognitivos, estudos de tradução e semiótica, incluindo diferentes teorias sobre metáforas cognitivas e misturas conceituais. Especial atenção é dada à dinâmica cultural de tais processos no tratamento de suas condições mentais, materiais e sociais. O resultado é um estudo abrangente, que não se concentra nos estudos de caso, mas também fornece um contexto cultural, filosófico e histórico para considerações sobre a possível influência do artsci na cultura contemporânea. | pt_PT |
