The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between subjective social mobility, coping strategies, job satisfaction, and symptoms of anxiety and depression among Brazilian immigrants living in Portugal. Forty Brazilian immigrants (57.5% women; mean age = 31.25 years) participated in the study. They completed the MacArthur Subjective Social Status Scale (online), which assesses perceived social status in Brazil and Portugal, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD- 7), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Brief COPE, and the Job Satisfaction Scale. Most participants (72.5%) perceived downward social mobility after immigration. Participants who experienced upward mobility had higher scores on depressive symptoms (M = 26.60, SD = 19.32 on the BDI) compared to those who maintained their status (M = 8.17, SD = 2.40) and those who experienced downward mobility (M = 15.34, SD = 10.11, F(2,37) = 3.96, p = 0.028). Avoidance was the only coping strategy correlated with psychological distress (ρ = 0.609 with the BDI; ρ = 0.564 with the GAD-7, both p < 0.05). The results highlight the complexity of the relationship between subjective social mobility and mental health in a migratory context, suggesting the psychological costs associated with both downward and upward mobility.
