Uma das facetas tradicionalmente mais valorizadas da Antiguidade Clássica é a sua misoginia. São cerca de treze séculos de história muito favoráveis à figura masculina, para nós cristalizada na figura do 'paterfamilias' romano, consagrada pelo 'mos maiorum'. Não obstante este retrato degradante da mulher, também é possível encontrar nesta época relatos de uma grande elevação humana, a tal ponto que em autores, como Terêncio, se poderá reconhecer a existência de uma vontade firme de revalorizar o papel da figura feminina.
