Trauma a quatro patas : o papel dos animais de companhia na violência conjugal em Portugal

A relação entre violência conjugal e animais de companhia tem recebido crescente atenção internacional, permanecendo ainda pouco explorada em Portugal. Partindo da compreensão da violência conjugal como experiência potencialmente traumática que se estende ao ecossistema relacional da vítima, este estudo procurou compreender as experiências de vítimas que coabitaram com animais de companhia durante a relação abusiva, explorando o papel destes no contexto do trauma associado à vitimação. Adotou-se uma metodologia qualitativa de orientação fenomenológica, com entrevistas semiestruturadas a cinco mulheres, analisadas segundo os pressupostos da análise de conteúdo. Os resultados revelam que o vínculo humano-animal ocupa um lugar central na experiência das participantes. Marcado por cuidado, proteção, regulação emocional e continuidade identitária, este vínculo pode paradoxalmente também ser instrumentalizado pelo agressor, expor a vítima a maior risco e influenciar processos de permanência ou saída. Apesar desta ambivalência, o vínculo mostrou conservar uma estabilidade própria, relativamente autónoma face à dinâmica abusiva, passível de moldar a vivência do trauma. A reduzida visibilidade desta dimensão nas respostas institucionais evidencia a necessidade de integrar o vínculo humano-animal na compreensão do trauma e no ajustamento das respostas de apoio a vítimas com animais de companhia.
The relationship between intimate partner violence and companion animals has received growing international attention yet remains scarcely explored in Portugal. Understanding intimate partner violence as a potentially traumatic experience that extends to the victim's relational ecosystem, this study sought to understand the experiences of victims who cohabited with companion animals during the abusive relationship, exploring the animals' role in the context of the trauma associated with victimization. A qualitative, phenomenologically oriented methodology was adopted, drawing on in-depth semi-structured interviews with five women, analysed through content analysis. The findings reveal that the human-animal bond occupies a central place in the participants' experience. Characterized by care, protection, emotional regulation and identity continuity, this bond may paradoxically also be instrumentalized by the abuser, expose the victim to greater risk, and shape processes of staying or leaving. Despite this ambivalence, the bond retained stability of its own, relatively autonomous from the abusive dynamic, capable of shaping how the trauma is experienced. The limited visibility of this dimension in institutional responses highlights the need to integrate the human-animal bond into the understanding of trauma and into the adjustment of support responses for victims with companion animals.
