Abstract(s)
This article shares the principles of the historical renewal of the last decades in the field of the History of medieval sainthood and hagiography, namely the proposals of A. Vauchez, S. Boesch-Gajano, Th. Heffernan, Peter Brown, and their followers. We try to use the concepts and interpretative lines suggested by them, in a twofold direction: firstly, in the medieval Portuguese hagiographic texts, which have seldom been read likewise; secondly, whenever these texts are fragmentary or non-existent, we study the profile of the sainthood as it was felt by the candidates to saints, or by their contemporaries, making use of a wider group of sources. We consider particularly important the concept of “cultual text”, when dealing with hagiographic writings; in the case of biographies, we insist on the sociological approach.
