Abstract(s)
Abrams, Lamont, & Drury, 2017).
Introduction: Old age is the stage of life that has the most myths and associated stereotypes (Duran-Badillo et al., 2016), with personality factors being considered significant determinants of ageism (Allan, Johnson, & Emerson, 2014). Aim: Explore the relationship between negative stereotypes and the personality in different phases of the life cycle. Sample: A total of 291 adults and older adults with a mean age of 42.31 years (DP = 20.96, range = 18-91) completed the Negative Stereotypes Towards Aging Questionnaire and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory. Results: Older adults reported more ageist attitudes than younger adults and individuals with lower levels of education, widowers and individuals residing in rural areas had higher scores of negative stereotypes. Regarding personality, the dimension of Openness to Experience decreased with age and higher levels of Openness to Experience are associated with more positive attitudes towards aging. Conclusion: It is important to develop interventions that aim to change the negative view on this age group, in order to make older adults feel valued and integrated in today's society. The implications of negative stereotypes negatively influence physical and mental health (Ayalon & Tesch-Römer, 2017), with an increase in anxiety and a decrease in independence and quality of life (Swift, Abrams, Lamont, & Drury, 2017).
