Abstract(s)
The aging of the population, the emergence of new diseases, and the technical and scientific developments associated with the increasing complexity of equipment and procedures, in order to meet the constant demands, require differentiated and trained teams to respond to an increasing demand for quality care. Thus, the updating of nursing professionals has also become a priority, and specialized training is an increasingly necessary reality, in order to mobilize knowledge that enables the provision of differentiated care. This report is part of the 13th Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing, in the area of Nursing for Critically Ill Patients, of the Institute of Health Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University. As part of the Curricular Unit Final Internship and Report, this study aims to describe and analyze the activities developed and the skills acquired during the internship, which took place in the contexts of the Intensive Care Unit and General Emergency Service, in the period between September 1 and December 19, 2020. With the completion of the internships, the final report aims to expose the professional development through the description of the activities, interventions and skills acquired as Specialist Nurses, as well as to serve as an instrument for the assessment of the curricular unit. The starting point for its writing focused on the development of a learning project, specific to each internship field, where general and specific objectives were defined, as well as process and result indicators. Using a descriptive, analytical, and critical-reflective methodology on the activities developed, this study is based on the experiences in the internship contexts, and is analyzed according to the specific competencies of specialist nurses in critical patient care and supported by the most recent evidence. As a transversal theme to the different internship contexts, I analyzed the application of neuroprotective measures in the prevention of secondary injury in adult brain injury patients. As this is a public health problem, causing morbidity and mortality, it is essential to find strategies to reduce the incidence of secondary injury, which aggravates the sequelae and the definitive disability, if we cannot prevent the primary lesions resulting from the trauma.
