| dc.description.abstract | Armed conflicts have been a reason not only for human suffering, but also damage to cultural heritage, contributing to the erasure of memory and identity. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how the protection and preservation of cultural heritage can contribute to post-conflict peacebuilding in societies affected by conflict, with a focus on UNESCO’s role in this process, as well as the part that local communities play. Based on the assumption that the protection of cultural heritage requires institutional frameworks, we aim to analyse how the application of such frameworks helps to protect cultural heritage and how that protection, in turn, helps communities pave the way for post-conflict peacebuilding. This work begins with an explanation of core concepts regarding cultural heritage and the importance of culture, as well as its protection. We then proceed to analyse and contextualise influential documents related to the safeguarding and preservation of cultural heritage through an examination of UNESCO conventions, declarations, and reports, as well as relevant papers and journal articles, and their relevance for social development and cohesion. Finally, using practical examples and a case study ofAleppo, Syria, the importance of protecting cultural heritage in post-conflict peacebuilding is explored as a strategy for achieving sustainable peace. We suggest that UNESCO acts as an international actor with the capabilities and resources necessary for the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural heritage, while the involvement of local communities helps the revival of memory and the rebuilding of identity. Together, they transform heritage from a target of violence into a tool for reconciliation, aiming to achieve a sustainable recovery and a peaceful future. | eng |
| dc.description.abstract | Os conflitos armados têm vindo a causar não só sofrimento humano, mas também danos no património cultural, contribuindo para o desaparecimento da memória e da identidade. O objetivo desta dissertação consiste em examinar como a proteção e a preservação do património cultural podem contribuir para a construção da paz pós-conflito, com foco no papel e função da UNESCO e das comunidades locais nesse processo. Partindo do pressuposto de que a proteção do património cultural requer um regime jurídico, pretendemos analisar como a aplicação desse regime ajuda a proteger o património cultural e como essa proteção, por sua vez, apoia as comunidades na preparação de um caminho para a construção da paz em situações de pós-conflito. Este trabalho começa com uma explicação dos conceitos fundamentais relativos ao património cultural e à importância da cultura, bem como à sua proteção. Em seguida, analisamos e contextualizamos importantes documentos relacionados com a salvaguarda e a preservação do património cultural por meio de uma análise das convenções, declarações e relatórios da UNESCO, bem como de artigos e publicações pertinentes, e a sua relevância para o desenvolvimento e coesão social. Por fim, utilizando exemplos práticos e um estudo de caso de Alepo, na Síria, exploramos a importância de proteger o património cultural na construção da paz pós-conflito como estratégia para alcançar uma paz sustentável. Sugerimos que a UNESCO atua como um agente internacional com as capacidades e os recursos necessários para a identificação, proteção e preservação do património cultural, enquanto o envolvimento das comunidades locais contribui para o renascimento da memória e a reconstrução da identidade. Juntos, transformam o património de um alvo de violência para uma ferramenta de reconciliação, de modo a alcançar uma recuperação sustentável e um futuro pacífico. | por |
